3.5 ton or trailer?

Hi all,

Just wondered if anyone had any thoughts on the above? Having passed my test after '97 I'd have to sit a trailer test, also upgrade to a 4x4. But would this be cheaper in the long run than getting a 3.5 ton horsebox and keeping car as a little run around? Also, can I expect to get a decent horsebox for around the 4 grand mark?

Thanks in advance

depends on how many miles you do per week work on 4x4 doing 25/30 mpg work out how much more per week to run a 4x4 tax and insure then you are wearing out expensive tyres and the service and repair costs of a 4x4 and the trailer maintanace insurance, however you could transport 2 horses whereas a 3.5 is one big or 2 ponys, however you wont get a nice 3.5 ton box for your budget but you would get a nice trailer for 3k and a cheap 4x4 starts at about 1500..........

With a 4x4 don't forget road tax! Ours is £400 a year :o then on top of that buying the car, the trailer etc.

However, I hear of more broken lorries then broken trailers and it would be unlikely you'd get a decent lorry which runs well for £4k but you'd probably save more in the long term as you won't have to paid road tax on the 4x4 and could have a little run around car.

Hi

A few more thoughts for you-just my opinion:)

A quick look at a certain internet auction site revealed some tidy looking Transit-based boxes within your price range which may be ideal for your needs. There is always the "weight issue" with any size box,but if you are only looking to travel one horse that won't concern you-and he/she may like it better in a box rather than a trailer.

Trailers need maintenance, and hitchlock/wheelclamp/or both, and while they may not "break" so often, they are a target for the light-fingered fraternity-have you somewhere secure to store it?

How much would you get for your car if you sold it?And do you want a "cheap 4x4 starting at £1500" as your main transport? You've already got the car,so hang on to it!

Hope you can find something you like:)
