Does anybody do this?
I have a fairly short commute that doesn't involve towns. Parking at work and at home isn't an issue. Annual mileage <10k.

Pros & cons ?

Are they more economical to run than a 4x4 and trailer when used as the only vehicle, or would a 4x4 be similar/more economical to run than a small box?

TIA

I don't do it no sorry!

However i can say that i use ours as a runaround when my car is in the garage or whatever and its fine, Ive done food shopping, gone to school parents eve and all sorts . I can also say it costs me about the same to run a certain distance fuel and tax etc wise as my old 4x4 used to.
I couldn't afford to use it constantly but that's why i sold the 4x4 I do a fair amount of miles so a small car was the preferred option but if you can afford to run a 4x4 you can probably afford to use a lorry as one.

All i'd say is what about nights out- going for a nice dinner or what ever in a horse box? Or a weekend away?!

I could get away with it at a push. My biggest problem would be using it to transport the dogs anywhere and getting in and out of the yard if it snows! We use it quite a lot running around locally and have actually found it more economical on fuel than our Isuzu (3.5 is a renault master van). Park on the drive at home, fits through the KFC drive thru barrier, OK in Tesco and tbh I do keep it very clean in the cab and the grooms bit so going away would be fine. If push came to shove I think I would part with the 4x4 first.

A friend of mine had a 3.5 ton box as his only mode of transport & he found it fine. It was more economical than a 4x4, he could carry anything he wanted as he had loads of room. I think the only down side was sometimes the smell of the horses transferred on to him?

Check your lorry insurance! I considered this when temporarily without a car and mine excludes commuting.
