I want a cheap old 3.5t lorry. Seen some on Ebay for between £500-1000.
Just wondered if these golden oldies actually run ok, what to look out for and if any makes/models are better than others??

Any happy ending stories about buying a cheap old lorry??

how old are the ones your looking at? the good thing with (some) older lorries is the engines are so basic there is very little to go wrong with them.. but then you need one that has been looked after for all its years!!

i have an old 'un for sale on eBay but its not that cheap - it's still in good nick and working order.. i'd be wary of carrying my pride and joy (horse!) about in something that cost £500..

i have a 3.5t on ebay at the moment @ £750. The only thing wrong with it is that i had half the jobs done for the MOT, then had twins! i ended up being offered a bargin box this summer so i bought that and decided to part with mine. I did want to get mine back on the road before i sold it but time just hasnt allowed so its on ebay with half the jobs done!
It was a very loyal box for me, was easy to drive and never gave me any problems at all! i went to wales in it, up to cumbria etc.
I think there are good boxes to be had, just as with anything, be careful. I have seen some on ebay that are not even double axelled at the back which is plain stupid/dangerous to convert!

I have one - a lovely old 1984 Bedford CF 350 that has just sailed through the MOT (as it has every year in the three years I've had it!) She runs like a dream, is reliable and easy to drive despite not having power steering, I can do the ramp on my own, she's got a living / changing area and good sized box. Double axle, always been a horse box.

Spent most of the last year going up and down to Rossdales with no probs (70 mile round trips) and I'm now selling her as just about to buy horse number 2 so need a bigger box.

I would deffo be looking at more than £500-£1000 though, she's too well maintained and equipped for that kind of money.

Pm if interested ;-)

just thought i would also add, both of mine are Ford Transits and i love them!
the one i am selling is a G reg, and my current one is a R reg. I know someone who had a Bedford CF which was an older one and she had no problems with that either.
i think if you dont mind getting one that maybe needs general TLC - ie, respray etc you will be able to get one, just as i said before, be careful! i know someone who was robbed blindly for one IMO which shouldnt have been on the road.

That's a nice looking one there JM07. Not too far away from me either.
Nice to hear that some people do have some nice little runners.
Do you have the link for yours LuckiLotti?? Not for advertising purposes for anything!

I would get any potential purchase thoroughly checked out by someone that specialises in horseboxes. The floor and ramp being the most important to check from both top and underneath as you don't want your horse falling through them. Also get the weight checked on a weigh bridge so that you know you have enough free pay load weight to cover the horse, equipment and the passenger and driver. There have recently been a number of fatal accidents wher horses have attempted to jump in to the living tack area and it is essential that their is either a collapsable bar or the area is partitioned in.
