3.5T horsebox for a 17.1hh... reccomendations please...

I'm looking for a horsebox which my 17.1hh will fit in comfortably but can be driven on a normal car licence (i.e. under 3.5 tonnes)... Preffereably a side load/unload.....

Can anyone reccomend good places to buy secondhand horse boxes or reccomend particular boxes / builders that are good to look out for?

I think you will really struggle to find one suitable for a 17.1 to travel in. All the 3.5 tonnes I have seen have headroom below the 7ft6 required for a horse over 16.3h. The only ones I can imagine working are the racehorse boxes as they are built low to the ground. But there are not many racehorses that are over 17hh so again I think the upper height limit will be a problem. You need to make sure that the width of the box is adequate in relation to the height to ensure a stable ride for the horses. I have seen several 3.5 tonnes that are just so unstable and wobble as they travel and seem to tip alarmingly around corners.
 
The was a company that did a 'Hunter' range for large horses. I'll see if I can find the link.

Try Stratford Horseboxes - they are new to the market. Designed by Eddie Stobart with Jonjo O'Neil. They have an internal height of 2200mm and will take up to 17hh. I'm not 100% certain that they are under 3.5t but worth a look??

These are advertised and hired out to take up to 17.2. The company selling these hires them out so you could "try before you buy". I find them excellent boxes.

I know someone with one of these and they are fabulous boxes but it'd have to be a small 17.2hh to fit in there! His 16.3hh is a snug fit. I also agree with a previous poster that the weight limit would be in jeopardy with such a big horse plus extras.
 
google can van ( think it might be one word, cant remember ) they do a high top van which should suit, you would only get one horse in on that limit of weight, no living!
 
Id be very careful and get any box you like weighed before you buy iy to ensure you have enough payload to carry your horses. Ovb you need to have an idea what your horses weighs to know if you can take horse, full tank of fuel, water, tack, people etc.
You might be better with a large trailer or a 7.5 tonne lorry.My friends partner is a trailer/LGV, HGV driving instructer and the test isnt as bad as you might think if dont have the entitlment on your licence
