Ok, I think I know the answer to this one but just need it clarified so I can cross it off my list!!

Are there any 3.5t lorries out there that would have a payload large enough to legally carry two 16.2hh TB types?

If not, will most 3.5t lorries carry a 16.2hh TB type with a Section A?

You would have to ask the makers but my guesstimate would be none. Fully laden you would have to be under 3.5 tonnes - two 16.2 h TBs are going to weigh around 550-600kgs, so between them at least a 1.1 tonnes, probably more. Then there is you and your saddles, rugs, other tack, hat, boots, kit, say another 100 kgish depending on how heavy you are. Then say 20kgs for 20 litres of water. Then diesel - which weighs around 2kgs to the litre, so if you have 80 litres thats 160kgs. Add that little lot up and your chassis including the partitions, mats (they weigh a LOT) etc has to come in at around 2 tonnes. Now I used to own a range rover sport, and that weighed 2.5 tonnes so its going to be tough for a horsebox to manage to be 2 tonnes unladen I would have thought. I think 1 horse you should be ok, and the section A probably yes too but depends on the unladen weight of the horsebox.
 
I posted a thread about my trip to the weighbridge a while ago. In summary I have a newish 3.5t with a 1.1t payload. I loaded it up with two people, tack and kit for one horse, including water and half a tank of diesel plus said horse, a 15.2hh TBx. We came in at 3.2t. I couldn't honestly say I'd want to add in a section A even though I possibly could as the 3.5t is a limit not a target!

There is a lorry on eBay that says up to a 1400kgs payload which might do 2 big horses, have also seen a very old lorry on there with a 1.5kgs payload so there are some options for bigger neds, but not many!
 
My lorry is a 3.9t as was a minibus in a previous life. I'm told would carry my 15hh and another similar.
Might be an idea to get a slightly larger box — although unless your my age or above (40ish) you may not be able to drive on your licence and does need plating rather than an MOT
 
Gahh I did it again :o :o

Was thinking of doing a lorry test and getting a 5 or 6 tonner but am just trying to role out other options! Sadly there don't seem to be many around within my budget!
 
Can't post link as phone stupid, but item no of the 1400kgs ones is 200712383957 & the older lorry is finished now but there is a phone no so if u look it up you could always call them & see if they still have it. Item no 190626321214 :)
 
I'm no expert but from what I have read most will only take 1 big and one small horse or 2 smaller horses at most.

I think there are a few that will have a big enough payload to take to big horses. But they are built from very light weight materials, which are more expensive and not so strong and safe in an accident.

Hmm first thing to bare in mind is the renault chassis cab before the body is fitted weighs about 1800 kg
so not saying it doesnt have a 1400kg payload but would like to see it on a weigh bridge with patition ,mats a spare wheel , a sensible amount of fuel and a driver !!!!! as most of the industry see a payload of 1200kg as about the best achivable for a 3.5 tonner...
maybe the chassis manufactures will make the chassis lighter in the future but compliying with safety standards
are the main reason the newer ones are fairly heavy compared to older designs,
