Hi, been looking to hire a 3.5t lorry but none seem to have enough pay load. I would need 1.3 really to be comfortable so started looking to buy can anyone recommend a company that sell (or make) safe good quality 3.5t lorries with a 1.3t payload? do they exist?

Simply, you'd be struggling! Speak to Alexander's as they make a transport spec which may be lighter weight. To get a well converted one with that payload (for horses, not horses +fuel + water etc) you'll be paying ££. You'd probably be better off looking at getting a 7.5ton or similar.

From my research I found that Boss and Alexander horseboxes had the best payload. I think Boss was slightly better. I can't recall if it was as much as 1.3t though.

Its mad how they build horseboxes advertised for taking 2 X 17hh horses and then your struggling to take one + kit. I looked at hiring a 7.5 and that only had a 1.2t payload so still couldn't even take 2 horses and kit. Never thought it would be this hard to find a horsebox as neither of the horses will travel in a trailer (which funnily had enough payload for the 2 horses!!)

Don't need living but it is a bonus and can have anything up to 7.5t as OH can drive it but ideally 3.5t so I can drive it. Going to give it one last go to find a horsebox in my area (West Sussex) that is suitable. Only transporting a welsh d and a TB but between them they weigh 1 ton then 3 passengers, fuel, tack, water etc you are looking at an extra 250kgs so would rather be under than over.

Before you start spending anything I honestly would get your horses weighed - actually on a weighbridge or at the vets - I think I posted on your previous thread but your two many well be over the 1t... can you hire a 3.5 tonner - go to a weightbirdge get it weighed - load you big lad - and go back and get weighed again - if your in the truck both times it will give you a darn good idea of what you and him will weigh - and dont forget you will need fuel as well

alternativly can your ym arrange a dengie weigh in day? they come and offer loads of advice and bring a pair of scales.... then you can compare your weight with the real ones

GW

We have had a dengie weigh day and welsh D was 454kg didn't have the TB then but my 15.2 tb was 450kg and of similar build to the 16.2 (typo I couldn't correct as left it to late) so would guess he is 550kg 575kg at most but yes it does concern me how easy it is to be over weight

funny weight tape was only a few kilos out for the 15.2 tb but quite a bit out for the welsh (can't remember how much but talking at least 50kgs)

I've gone with 80kg per person and 5kg for tack per horse but that could be way out I know I weigh roughly 65kg with cloths but not full yard clobber.

Your already right on the limit them without water, feed, diesel, your riding kit - hay nets - boots bandages..travel rugs.... sweat rugs.... beer and sarnies - and then you need space for the trophies on the way back :D

put your yard kit on if you can - including coat and boots and hop on the scale - you may be in for a shock

Basically 3.5t lorries are not designed / able to take 2 horses no matter how they are marketed.

Yes they have the space for 2 x 17hh horses but as you are finding not the payload.

I think you will find your extras weigh more than you would expect and that most people with a 1.1t payload, one horse and all of the tack for an event would be getting pretty close.

I have a racemaster box with 1.2 payload.
With a 16.1hh horse weighing 550kg, I then add 100kg for each dressed adult to include handbags & gear as I would rather be generous (I dont have big friends :p but we all weigh a lot heavier with full winter yard gear on!)
Adding another 100kg for tack, water container (for 1 bucket only) rug & haynet, brushes, picnic basket & my competition gear to change into etc.

This means I usually estimate my load with tank of fuel, 3 adults, 1 horse with tack rug & hay is approx rounded UP to 1000kg.
Having put this all on local weighbridge, I was not far out 2 months ago & the load was indeed 926 with the above on it (inc full fuel tank & 2nd spare haynet)

I will not take any other horse, with the exception of TF on rare occasions (she likes the odd party! :D)

Mine was made by Unique coachworks in Oxfordshire. I'm happy with the build quality but did NOT have a good customer experience, PM me if you want further info.

It's a Movano/ Master chassis van and a had a simple conversion done with extra long ramp, partition, windows, lighting, rubber mat and white lining throughout, but no living at all to keep weight down. That gives me 1.5 tonne of payload which is fine for my big (17.1) WB alone, or my two TB polo ponies.

It can be done, you just need to do your research and work out what you really need and what you can live without.

One way to reduce the weight for those with only a B licence using a 3.5 tonne horsebox is to get a 750 kg MAM trailer or caravan for the tack etc etc

basic model is road legal with one 15.2 and one 17hands plus 2 people on, plus tack/water :)

i know as ive weighed mine before all you doubters start! :P

1.4t payload on smaller wheel base
1.3 on the long.

i love mine!
no posh paint job or graphics but does what it says on the tin.
