Realistically I would prefer a lorry for Orbi, just to get us out and about. I get the fear that someone will block us in with the trailer if I go to the beach etc..

Orbi being 17.2/3, how comfortable will he be in a 3.5t? I know I definitely wont get a friend in with him.

It will need to be the coachbuilt type not the van type.

Or 7.5t ? Just lorry size difference really? I know he will fit in that easier.

Does anyone have any experience of similar?

I'd have been happy to put a horse of his size in mine, but you do need just to check how high the roof extension is.

I think also with a horse of his size I would want him more restricted in side to side movement than I used to travel mine, because if he does decide to have a party he will really rock a 3.5t van conversion! I would also want an LWB with a solid wall.

I loved my Fiat Ducato van, it was brilliant.

Depends how old you are.

7.5 cheaper to buy but more expensive to run. 3.5 with a horse of any size on plus kit, tank, water etc is likely overweight. So many adverts have very wild claims as to payload. Buyer beware.

Sorry AA that is definitely not true of one horse and the right van. I was never anywhere near going over weight with one horse, 2 passengers and all our kit on my 3.5t.

It is good practice, though, to weigh any ban you plan to buy before handing over any money..

Sadly I am 49 🤣 so yes I can drive it.

Thats what is confusing me, payload would be ok as all I plan to do is go to the beach and hopefully give cross country a try for fun and possibly some fun rides.
Orbi is a big boy but still athletic looking and he is probably about 680 kg but that was a tape I measured with. So won’t take much to be over I suppose.

Too flimsy for me ycbm, the vast majority of incidents with travelling horses occur in van type transport, i've got 2 over 800kg and wouldn't put them in vans. A solid 7.5 gives a better ride but the dvla rules prevent so many people from being able to drive them now which is why the vans are so popular. There are some lovely ones about that are coach built but mega money to buy.

But not sure I can park it at my house, thats the only thing, would need to be the yard

I think you may be out of date with the strength of modern materials but I agree a 3.5 isn't right for an 800 kg but few people own leisure horses that heavy and BBs will be nowhere near it.

If budget is no issue I’d get a quality 3.5tonner for what you want. I have a 4.5 tonner with living but it wouldn’t suit your size!
Budget is a kind of issue lol, i dont really want to spend more than possibly 6/8 ish.
If I was competing and using it regularly it would be worth it I guess

I saw a 16.3 warmblood in a van type last night with plenty of room, whether Orbi would be happy though 🤣

I'm in the dark ages for most things. A quick glance at 3.5 - 4.5 van types of quality needs 30k plus to buy, but they do look nice.

I have a 2009 tector which wasn't over expensive to buy, but soon turned into a money pit sadly. It is a minefield to buy trucks, expert advice is needed, which I had, and it still went wrong !

Im not spending that lol, id rather just drive my trailer 🤣

100% you'll be better off with a 7.5t with your budget- even then be careful and get it checked over before parting with any money.

However you'll need to put around £1500/year aside for servicing and plating on top of your normal running costs.

An absolute minimum of £1500, I double that for comfort though haven't actually needed it all..... Yet! That said I love my 7.5 Daffy Truck 🚛 🚛 🚛
