Hi,

Finally coming to the realisation that my lovely car is mega poo when it comes to rutted roads and slippy mud so am looking at replacing it. As our dear old Trooper sometimes lacks power I was considering getting something we could use to tow.

We tow a large Wessex (like an Ifor 511 weight wise) with two sturdy hunt types at 16hh, along with plenty of associated junk! I would also use it for my commute a few times a week so needs to be decent to drive but mpg not the be all and end all (within reason) as I don't do an awful lot of miles.

What would you recommend that can tow 3.5 tonnes with decent power (the trooper would tow the house, just never v fast!) so that we can be safe on motorways as well as hauling up hills. Needs to be £5k or less. Won't even consider a Ssangyoung or disco so they are out!

Looking forward to your suggestions!

My Jeep Grand Cherokee tows 3.5 tonnes. We tow an ancient Rice trailer that weighs a ton, plus a 16hh and a 13.2hh and apart from the noise of the trailer :o you wouldn't know it was there.

It DRINKS petrol though. Very comfy to drive but visibility not great.

My landy defender 90 TD5 (T reg and in amazing condition with upgraded wheels and tyres and suspension) was £5k. Admittedly was a risk as purchased on eBay and had to collect from the Orkney islands but would tow 3.5t without a thought and is surprisingly not as heavy on diesel as I expected!

Another vote for Jeep Grand Cherokee. Absolutely love mine, but agree with previous poster, they are thirsty beasts! Not towing mine averages 24mpg and it's a diesel. I think there are a few LPG conversions around, but don't know what they'd be like to tow with.

Check out the members vehicle and trailer combinations link in my signature as they have been rated out of 10 according to what their owners think of them

I had exactly the same requirements as you earlier this year.
I've now got an 02 plate LWB shogun. I think it is only actually got 3.3 tonnes but it always seems to have plenty of pull for a big trailer (richardson 1100kg) with a 900kg horse in it and I load up car with 3 adult passengers and trailer with enough stuff to last us for weeks! We do mostly motorway miles and it's quite content up to speed but will happily drag us through tracks, fields, hills, etc.
Without the trailer on it will happily 'go' but it's not built for flying along at 85mph!
I paid £3.5k for it earlier this year.
