So want to go to a camp 3 hours away next June. I have a 506 and want to take my horse 16.1 ISH and 15h Connie. Thought I would hire a self drive 3.5t as it may be more comfy for them for a distance. The hire company have told me that the truck can only carry 950kg. Is that game over then and we have to do the trailer?

I think you’d be overweight. ISH is probably 500kg at least and the Connemara 450. Add you, diesel, tack, hay and water, and you’ll be over, unless they’ve factored this in. There are 3.5 boxes with a bit more payload than this so might be worth checking with other companies.

No they haven’t factored that in, and to be honest after Christmas I think I will weigh a good 50kg ?
I am genuinely surprised as assumed it would just be like towing a trailer.
will I need to stop regularly on a 3/4 hour trailer journey? How can I make them as comfy as possible x

I had a thought on this earlier. If you could find a hire box with higher payload (many claim 1100kg) and your friend were to drive after you with ALL the equipment and water. You might just be within the weight with only you and the horses on board.
