3.5t with towbar

My 7.5 t is going and I’m looking at a 3.5 that I can just jump in and go… but to fit everything that we have right now, I need to add a towbar for a lightweight trailer (yes, under 700 kg loaded)

Does anyone know what I need to be looking for in terms of build- how to know if a van is suitable for a towbar if it’s coach built, etc? We’ve had every possible combination of towing vehicles apart from a 3.5 van and I want to get it right if I buy without to have one fitted after purchase.

i think it comes down to the position of the step at the back. Depends on your budget, but i think Stephex/ Oakley come with tow bars.

Most 3.5s should have the power to pull a trailer.

I’ve seen people with two ponies in the van and the horse in a trailer behind at shows. Also seen horse and small pony in the van and larger horse in the trailer behind. So you can definitely tow with a 3.5t van.

Also regularly see people towing their horses boxes with standard 3.5t vans that aren’t horse boxes so it’s not exactly uncommon.

My coachbuilt box that i sadly sold earlier this year had a tow ball fitted for me from new and just 2 phase hook up (lights only) this was just under the Safe step that was fitted.
I towed a caravan on the back a few times, DH also towed a small trailer on the back too.
As long as its correctly fitted, wired up for lights AND you have the right licence, then you are sorted

Dozens of works van's have tow bars on and are quiet capable of towing your needed weight. The majority of 3.5 boxes are built on the same chassis, so speak to the vehicle manufacturer or ask the box manufacturer for their clarification and towing limits, they will advise on companies who supply and fit them. A few e-mail should soon solve your queries.

You dont need a special licence to tow anymore. So long as you've got a driving licence, you can tow with anything up to 3.5tonnes.

With an unbraked trailer 750kgs or less pretty much anything will tow it. Even my mini can tow that! So just find one you can fit a tow bar too and away you go.

Yup- that’s exactly it, I’m Dun- I’m just wondering if there’s any particular brand or shape to avoid if it’s coach built and with a frame extending past the chassis, if that makes sense! I’ve had wagons for about 17 years, 17/10/7.5 tonne and 3.5 is all new to us- I’ve joined groups of ‘for sale’ on FB but it just looks like a minefield!
