Hi folks, would you give your crystal balls a little polish and give me your thoughts on my horsebox dilemma? Its not an unusual one, but things are changing so much and I don’t thing we’ve had a thread on this for a month or two.

I have an old but well-built and maintained van conversion which has just passed its MOT and service with no issues, its in good shape right now but my very trusted mechanic has seriously advised that it’s time to sell it (while it’s still worth something to someone) and upgrade to a newer one, particularly as I do longer distances over the summer. I trust his experience and was starting to think about it too. So it’s going up for sale in a month or so.

Prices for second hand boxes still seem mental, so I was considering selling soon (to maximise mine) and managing without for maybe up to 6 months while I do the leg work to find or have built a safe and economically viable box. I do need a box by winter as I have to travel to school once we lose the light. My budget would be in the £10-15k range, which used to be good… but now…. Yikes. I'd like a coachbuilt 3.5tn (for headroom) but realisitcally I can afford another van conversion (to get a better vehicle).

My major worry is how poor value for money second hand van and built boxes are right now – but will this continue?? I think the pressure on material costs might go on for some time, but will the rises in cost of living mean that demand will fall and supply might rise as sadly people have to sell? I don’t want to over pay and see 1000s drop off the value of my shiny new box as I’ll have to part finance it.

What would your strategy be?

I'd probably sell now as like horses, there's usually more demand for boxes with people going out and doing more in the spring/ summer. Although I don't know if the current diesel prices will have an effect on horsebox sales.

For buying I'd probably keep my eyes open in case something came up but would expect it to again be like horses and prices to dip in the autumn and winter.
