Lorry is poorly and unlikely to get better

So, am looking at getting a Cheval three horse or a four horse trailer. Have checked that my Disco can tow either of them loaded, now I just need to get some thougth on these types of trailers

Fautras are fantastic if a little pricey -great tack storage and roomy.
Also the biggest Equitrec will take 3 horses herringbone and has a rear ramp like a lorry. Our friend loves hers and tows it with a Disco

Absolutely loved the 3 horse one, haven't had any experience with 4 horse - what would be it's MAM? I mean, 4 horses make at least 2 t of load, plus the trailer can't be very light either, hmmm.

Don't know all the technical blurb, but trailer weight is just over 1200kg, Disco can tow 3500kg so long as is a braked trailer (I've checked this with Land Rover and various other places), so that leaves 2300kg give or take a few for four horses and whatever else we put in the trailer. We can load the Disco itself to the norm.

Been doing some research, and so far the Chevals seem the lightest, yet stable trailers available.

Chances of me finding a second hand one...

Yeah, I kind know it is legal, just heavy, ya know

Depending where you are based and how far you are prepared to travel, I could recommend Cheval dealer, who had some of the bigger ones second hand last time I checked, let me know if you would like me to and I will dig up his details.

Not to bad then, the bloke is near Tideswell(SP!) in Derbyshire, not sure if he advertises a lot, pretty unusual place to be selling trailers as he also runs a holiday caravan site... When I rang up first time they thought I want to book holiday LOL
I will get my OH to find his details, very nice man and does good deals.

Be carefull some are ilegal in the uk to tow with a 4x4, need a lorry to tow them because they are too wide MAX width is 2.3 mtrs or 7'6" overall I wanted an american trailer but most are 8ft + laws are different in europe so they can have wider trailers and caravans... so check before you buy,, good luck

Just checked. They are 2520mm, so that's 252

Will call the suppliers in the morning. I've emailed the DoT to find out if there's a particular point at which it is measured, i.e. does the fact that the body of the trailer is narrower than the wheel base (external) make these okay to tow with a vehicle with 3500kg or less (the Disco is 3500kg).

Been looking at trailers and measurements (head hurts!).

The internal width of the Cheval is 2m, and the external width is 2.5m. No way the walls have that depth to them! I'm guessing that it's the width of the wheels that makes the trailers external width as 2.5m. The other trailer manufacturer specs show internal widths.

Right, back to doing some work now

They mesure the total width mud gaurds, end of axle etc, and its over 3500kg GVW no car type 4x4 is and not many vans , its a pain we could have better trailers and i dont see the problem with 8 ft , I asked these questions,, there was a downing street petition to change the law by people who wanted the big continetal caravans, but they wouden't and gave a lame answer about road safety,

Oh and its stupid because you can have a load that is wider than the trailer... carnt remember exacty but it is quite a lot..
People do have these big caravans and i have seen the big horse trailers being used... guess its fine until you get stopped by VOSA or a copper that knows the law or have a accident and find your insurance is invalid

The Fautras are nice, and I saw lots of them whizzing up and down the motorways in France. A party of french people came over on the ferry with 4 horses to a show in Kent a few years ago, towed by a land rover.
