On the 3rd night of fireworks, tala is not impressed, if I knew when they were happening I could at least try a dap diffuser or collar but it's mid October so I don't expect them. First night I thought must be a birthday or something nothing we can do but it's just 1 night then it's over but now we're on the 3rd night, surely there can't be a 4th tomorrow maybe I should get a diffuser anyway just as in "in case". No point to this post really other than a moan 😢

She's the 1st of our 4 that has been upset by them, first 2 were never bothered but the 3rd was anxious when we got her but took confidence from our boy we had then and after the first bonfire night and Xmas/ new year she just started sleeping through them, unfortunately tala doesn't have him to teach her this. Will see what's at pets at home tomorrow that might help if we are going to have a few more days of it.

I sympathise, we've had 3 consecutive evenings, but plenty of random ones going off since mid September, no doubt they will be continuing till end Nov. Then the Xmas and new year ones to follow.

Irritatingly, there is a fireworks shop round the corner from our road. He is closed from 5th Jan to the weekend before Easter, opening hours are extended through October to December to 8pm at night.

It's absolute misery here for pets, small children etc

October half term, running into Halloween, running into Guy Fawkes, plus party opportunities the weekends either side ….and Diwali, depending on local ethnicities….

Heard them every day since mid-August, I am absolutely sick of them but thankfully the dog doesn’t seem to care
That’s lucky, but continuous exposure can allow animals to blank stuff out, build up immunity.
In WWI, continuous squalor and shelling, but majority of horses and mules ultimately ‘coped’, some went completely demented and were shot by their own soldiers, but most didn’t, despite how awful everything was.
We’ve friends in the Loire valley near one of the chateaux that has son et lumiere with big fireworks, regularly all summer - their two horses and dogs are really blasé now, whereas when pyrotechnics ‘come out of nowhere’ - I lost a horse as a result, and the collie into fits, absolute mayhem for everyone.

It's genetics in dogs as well, with environmental stimuli. Some breeds need to be neutral to gunshots and other loud noises for the jobs that they do and anything noise sensitive is washed from the breeding programme. In other breeds it's not so important.

I agree generally, but I know of working dogs who are scared of fireworks but fine with guns. (Maybe training and reward).
Tawny’s sister is terrified of them. T never turned a hair.

Dogs can develop a noise phobia at any age so a dog that is fine with fireworks this year might not be okay next year.
I think this is nearer the mark, we’ve seen this, plus reported similar experiences of young, unbothered dogs turning into quivering wrecks in later life, when you might expect the opposite.
I do find most animals are influenced by others, though, if you’re lucky enough to have an oblivious, phlegmatic nanny-animal, the nervous one more likely to find that reassuring than anything the owner might do. Sheep and goats seem good firework-buddies for grazing horses, and I’ve heard similar about llamas / alpaca.

I was working the previous 2 nights so didn't see how she was but OH said she was worse last night 😢. This morning she seemed really tired and instead of running to the back gate to have her harness on for her walk she picked up her bone and went and laid on the grass with that instead, I put harness down and sat on the sofa then she decided a walk was in order but took every possible short cut so don't think she got much rest even after they finished. They did stop and start so it's not surprising she couldn't relax when they seemed to finish. I've got a diffuser and some pheromone cream to rub on her nose so will see what happens over the next few nights, although it might be too wet and there might not be more fireworks 🤷‍♀️

Very true.

My Lurcher showed no fear of fireworks until she was maybe four or five?

Now she is terrified. You can literally hear her heart pounding.

There is no sense in trying to medicate her, as they go on for weeks and are let off at random times. Sometimes it isnt even dark outside.

I honestly believe they will kill her one day.

Not sure if I’ve b posted before but my old lurcher was awful the minute she heard the slightest noise of fireworks, she would pace and pant and whimper. I tried the plug ins, the collar, the jacket that’s supposed to help but nothing worked, even with the tv on very loud and the curtains drawn, then I tried Zylkene and it stopped the pacing and whimpering and panting wasn’t continuous , she was still worried but not as bad… might be worth trying

Funnily enough, nothing the past 2 nights, but we were extremely rural. Tonight, they’ve been cut short by torrential rain but starting up again. Previous dog was very worried, these 2 aren’t, thankfully, at least not noticeably.

I thought we were having a night off due to the rain but they started up while we were on our walk. Very sporadic though so I'm not sure if she settled quicker when we got home ( not fully calm but not pacing and jumping / scratching at doors) because of the defuser or she just wasn't as wound up because they weren't so bad. Will see what the next few nights bring. If there are more and she's not coping will try the zyklene through the winter and talk to the vet about meds just for bonfire night and new years eve.
