3 ponies and on social benefits!

Why worry, we live on a crappy wet overcrowded island off the coast of europe and we are just about broke.... who cares anymore realy??? not the goverment or the opposition
lets have a race to the bottom maybe we can shed all the dead wood like doleys, non jobs and other usless penpushers.. and start from scrach again where hard work and enterprise is admired and respected....

Several years ago, I was very ill. My Doctor suggested I claim sickness benefit but I declined. My husband was earning a reasonable wage which we could 'get by on' - no luxuries like a horse though - and I have a deep rooted work ethic. Money is not given it should be earnt.

Honestly *rolleyes*. I was very ill, and I claimed benefits for two years when I was a teenager fresh out of foster care/homeless housing due to abuse from parents as a child. Then i went to uni, did a lot of volunteer work and am aiming on a job helping those less fortunate (which I am through to the final round interviews for) and improving government policy.

But maybe I should just be cast off as doley scum

Personally I'd cast off the nazi, selfish and miserable types in favour of a society which was humanitarian, which made the best out of every situation and helped others in the knowledge that if it went wrong for us, there would be others ready to help us.

But then, I guess that's why I don't vote tory

I earn my money, I work even against good advice this is due to my motivation not work ethics. I like nice things and I want to make a success of my life. I will not let this illness beat me!

However if my illness took a turn for the worse (close last year) and has organ involvement yes I would then claim, my husband then would be able to use some of that money to go towards employing someone to replace me at the company.

I just got cross at the, I work I deserve a hot tub replies. My Mum is on disability living allowance and is really ill. She is closely involved with the Church (earlier she was a church minister). She was recently reported for benefit fraud as someone said she had too much gold jewellery (bought by her parents and husband when she had a well paid job), drives a new convertible (won in SAFA raffle) and manages to fly abroad to see me and her grandchildren all the time (we pay their flights), the benefit was stopped until it was looked into. My Mum and step dad struggled and we had to help them, it has been reinstated after more letters from her DR but if we had not been there it would have been so tough for them.

I worry about green eyed monsters and reporting not knowing full facts that is all. It can cause so much damage, DLA and incapacity is actually very very hard to claim! Your illness is really looked into and in the UK so many who need it are rejected.

I just think caution without knowing facts is best used. People have good intentions but sometimes it can just go all wrong. I hate benefit fraud but would be weary to report it unless I was 100% I knew all the facts. I would hate someone to have their benefit stopped if they really needed it due to me being without the full facts just looking on judging!
 
Have to say i like in a housing assiciation flat, and for a few weeks when i was between jobs i had horses!!
but i have no idea how she can afford all that and with kids as well!!

i would report it, if your wrong your wrong - if your right, it'll mean someone that actually NEEDS the money will get it instead.

I work hard- so does OH. We earn decent money and pay our way - we pay for everything, claim for nothing. Never been on the dole, never been too sick to work- I am very fortunate.

I am not jealous or green eyed- if someone works hard and has lovely things- well done. If someone wins the lottery- good for you.

I'm not miserley, I don't begrudge anyone anything. If you cannot work because you are sick- claim what you are entitled. If you have low earnings, are a single parent, have a child with disabilities.....again, claim for what you are entitled to.

No-one has a problem with this, thats not what people are getting fraught about.

BUT...what I cannot stand is people getting WHAT THEY DONT DESERVE. People purposefully trying to get out of working, de-fraud the system and trying to claim money they are not entitled to and spending OUR money on luxuries like horses.

Thats what people are pissed off about, right?

If you suspect fraud, then contact the hotline, that's what it's there for.
 
Up until last tax year, we were entitled to Tax Credits due to the level of income/profits from the farm. This is my husband's own business where he works damned hard for.

Profits have now gone up and we're not entitled to anything, which is fine. Doesn't mean we were spongers though. You might as well claim if you're entitled.

Just to put you right.. a non job its a 'job' that is non productive they are ones created by the goverment for stupid people with useless pointless degrees, quangos and townhalls are full of them, they make up most of the adverts in the guardian

Unfortunately, it appears that some people do lack motivation and devoid of any work ethic.
I don't get cross at people wanting more, if its a hot tub, their own home, horses or a boeing 747. as long as they realise its not going to appear through scotch mist, wrapped in a bow and delivered courtesy of our welfare system.
Unless you work for the welfare department or you have been told by the recipient they are claiming benefits, how on earth can you be 100% sure thay aren't defrauding the system? If you are suspicious, it should be reported.
 
Don't accuse people of being nazis, that is a very offensive remark especially to me. Clearly your time at uni wasn't spent educating you. More wasted taxpayers money.
 
I dont work now after having LO, but we only receive CB and £20 a week WTC, which will go to £10 in april.

OH earns about 24k

We live in a council flat.

After we have paid rent, electric, gas phone and other financial commitments from our past we just have enough money for me to keep neddie on working livery - that's £50 a month max. He isn't fed and I don't insure him as he wont be covered for the most likely things to go wrong.

We are going to struggle even more if we try to run a car - it will be used for essentials.

No way could we do much if we had more kids and 3 horses. Well, we could if we ate beans.

If you are SURE they are claiming benefits and that they are doing work for cash in hand, please report them.

When I was working I was paying over £200 a month tax and about £100 NI - that's for 5years so its about £18k, yet I feel bad even claiming child benefits.

Someone said a while back that you should only have kids if you can afford to do it with NO help, but when you think about what those working pay into this country, and really, what we get back, well, its not really a fair exchange!
 
If you think they are defrauding the system then report them, if they are not then nothing will come of it.

However, different people find themselves in different situations. I have a friend who is 64 years old, she has worked all her life, paid off her mortgage and has two elderly horses that she has owned since they were youngsters. For a period of time now she has had to live with disability allowance. She is by no means rich and struggles tremendously physically and financially but she deprives herself to keep her old horses who are long retired. Should she sell her horses? One who is almost thirty years old? Bear in mind she has paid into the system all her life until recent times but she shouldn't be allowed to keep her 'luxuries'? They are more than luxuries to her, they are her family, she has no husband to help and support her. I think she is entitled to. Should she sell her home and her two old horses?
 
The National Benefit Fraud hotline was set up to investigate stuff like this, it's their job. If the people concerned have done nothing wrong then they have nothing to fear. If on the other hand they are "on the fiddle" then you'll be glad you reported it!
I have nothing against people claiming benefits they are entitled to, and if they manage to keep 3 ponies using that money than fair play to them! BUT it REALLY annoys me when people cheat the system and claim benefits unfairly.
If I was you I'd make the call..... National Benefit Fraud Hotline
 
Im more angry about the mps that earn great money but still feel the need to steal from tax payers, to pay for second homes and wide screen tvs, wheres the hotline for that oh and the prison sentence. why should they get away with everything they do and still get ur votes!!

There are a number of people on this forum who have been off sick with depression who still keep their horses. I'm assuming these people who advocate that the benefit system should only be paid for essentials therefore think those who are 'on the sick' and receiving benefits should sell their horses too - despite it arguably being the one thing that keeps them going.

Playing devils advoate my pet hate re hard working tax payers like I used to be (at Uni now which I'm paying for myself before anybody starts).

1. people who have more than two kids and yet the state is expected to educate them. I don't have kids - why should I have to pay for their education. My parents paid for mine.

2. People who can't control their eating habits and stuff their fat faces which is putting huge pressure onto the national health system. How dare they. Stay out of the fridge for god sake its not hard. Then hard working tax payers don't have to fork out such high NI payments.

3. People who drink alcohol. have you any idea what it costs this country not just in national health service costs OR in huge police costs but in terms of numbers of working hours lost cause those useless feckers can't drag themselves out of bed when they've got a hangover - all they are doing is STEALING from their employers after all.

I could go on and on and on.

Please people get a grip. If people want to spend their benefits on keeping their horse and not on other stuff then why shouldn't they not.

Seriously remember for all these benefits, especially incapacity, or whatever it is called, there but for the grace of God goes anyone! I know because I had to have it due to an unexpected illness.

Also in this time of recession and economic depression redundency is an issue for a lot of people. Will those who comdemned claim benefits? I imagine so.
 
Me and my OH both work PT and have lived in a housing association house for 10 months. was private rent before we were lucky enough to move back to the village I grew up in. I have several ponies, but they live on 10 acres for £80 PM. They only get essentials like worming/trimming (when needed), hard feed and haylage through winter.
None of mine get posh new things. Always had 2nd hand tack etc. Even Bear's saddles have been 2nd hand. and cheap lol. (they fit him BTW)
Maybe this ladies OH only earns so much as your allowed to earn so many K a year to be entitled to tax credits etc. We cant really pass comment as you dont know the ins and outs of their bank accounts do you?
I think its if you earn 20k plus your NOT entitled to tax credits/DSS etc.
I really couldn't justify/afford spending £90 pcm PER PONY!!!!

This is difficult. firstly, husband may be entitled to working tax credits. I am as profit for my self employed business is under 12k per year after all expenses. So this could be up to £80 per week depending on his age. As pointed out incapicity isn't means tested. And even if your on the dole your allowed to do 16 hrs of paid work per week, as long as when you go to sign on its declared. There is NO limit on the money you earn in this time (within reason, they will ask you to declare but never actually ask how much you made). I would presume that 10 yr old is on child allowance, so thats more money. DSS is also claimable on a flexi basis, you can pick and choose (great if your self employed as someone said earlier as some months will be very slow). However, under the governments new deal scheme you can only be on the dole for 6 months before they send you off to courses to help you job hunt. It's actually quite structured.

Messenger, you've been busy, seems your always posting threads on here making judgemental comments on other people's lifestyles or just moaning for the sake of it when i'm sure you yourself are far perfect.
I agree, some people do exploit the system, even politians do, and they are who WE elect to run the country for us. No life isn't fair and some people seem to accumilate more than others in dubious ways, but they do say most millionaires commit a crime to get rich. This system your so annoyed with is there for a reason, good or bad, it does help those that need it. No it isn't perfect, but what or who is. Certainly not you that's for sure. Yes we struggle for our little luxuries, while some manage to avoid it, but not all foreigners are scroungers. Not everyone claiming benefits uses it to buy a BMW, some actually use it to survive. And if some can manage their money well enough to buy and keep a horse who are you to judge? What if they decide to buy a car, or own a dog? Or have kids that want to go swimming? Shouldn't they be allowed to do that to? People make sacrifices for things sometimes, such as if you want to go on holiday, you save. So you're not happy about this individual having 3 ponies, then report them. Don't start getting jealous and putting everyones back up when you don't know their situatuation. You obviously have way to much time on your hands, why not get a proper job so you can afford to buy 3 more ponies, then you can shut the hell up.
 
Well there's a 12yr old girl on our yard who pays for her own horse with HER disability benefits. She has problems with her eyes and gets around £350/month in benefits. I think this is disgusting. What does i kid who can see with glasses need that kind of money for? I just dont get it. My family have never claimed a penny through the hard times as my dad's self employed and we manage to get by. This kid goes to lots of shows ha all the new stuff etc. Sorry but this makes me sick xx
 
i haven't read all the replies so haven't seen if you have or haven't called, but i hope you have!! having horses whilst being on benefits is ridiculous!! there is also not a chance in hell that JSA would cover 3 horses!! so where are they getting the other money from... other benefits or undeclared income!? either way it's wrong! get a job and pull your finger out like everyone else!

There must be more going on with this girl than just poor eyesight to be receiving a good level of disability allowance.

How do you know exactly what she is receiving? Have you made it your business to?

I am going to stick my neck out and say IMO that there are many disabled children in the UK whose benefits are used for many different things to provide a more comfortable and happier lifestyle to enable that child. If this child benefits from having a pony so what?

Do you know every detail about this family and their child? Do you live in their home? Consult with their specialists?

Don't be so quick to judge and condemn.
 
WOW....this makes me cross. My poor mum who has worked all her life ( as much as she could) is severley disabled with MS. She can not even feed, wash, dress, go to the loo herself un-aided. Her benefits have just been cut by £200 per month. This lady can do VERY little/ virtually nothing for herself. She never moans and sees good in everyone. .....at least she can do that. Those of you that say others are jealous of people on benefits are wrong.......benefits shoud be there to provide a basic way of life not give people what they'd like. I'm not a snob but I don't agree with people taking the P*SS. & yes claiming benefits & working for cash on the side is taking the P*SS. If you are a normal working tax payer and think that your hard earned taxes being used to pay out scroungers is acceptable then sadly you are a MUG
 
They openly tell people and it causes problems between the parents as all the money doesn't go towards the pony and one parent questions were the rest goes.
I don't make it my business but when the child is doing all the things i did at her ages i find it quite unfair she gets the extra money to pay for these kind of things
