This is a sensitive area, literally, but here goes: I ride alot and I tend to suffer from a sore / chaffed bit "down there" - on my bottom quite far in. I thought it was just me and just got on with it, unfortunately it hurts (occasionally) when I wash etc but comes and goes. Anyhow, my OH rode yesterday, quite a long one, and she complained alot about her bum, I didnt think much of it, but without going into detail, I can see she has the same problem. Down the pub last night we brought the subject up, cant remember how but I know nearby diners were definitely bemused and listening but low and behold, 2 fellow riders also really suffer, there is so much more I could say on here but I wont panic ye not! So there are 4 of us in our group with this problem, any of you out there suffer and if so, what do you suggest to alleviate it? I know alot of girls, including 2 riders we spoke to this weekend, suffer from their "front bum" hurting but this is not that problem haha. Thanks and STOP LAUGHING.

I'd say you're sitting incorrectly. You should be sitting on your seat bones. Try tucking your bottom in a bit rather than sticking your bottom out..

I dunno. I always wear/ride in thongs and a poster above says they find them irritating - I find thongs are great to ride in.

PS. I do have a small ass though, so you might be onto something there LOL!!

someone rode in my saddle last week and said it pinched their bum too? its synthetic, would that be making a difference? (im yet to hack in my new leather saddle) thanks for the seating advice, surely my instructor would say about my posture if it was wrong - i will ask her. its a recent thing but i found it intriguing that it isnt only me in the riding / drinking group! hmmm as for the size of my arse, its getting bigger that is for sure hehe (still a size 10 but only just!!). oh and how the hell do you ride in a thong? never ever no way could i even try that, the thought of it makes me shiver haha.

umm, it hasn't ever happened to me, but my best friend went for a job with a top eventer's mother who cheerfully grabbed a big handful of vaseline and shoved it down her breeches to help with the chafing before she got on...
might be worth a try. or get some of those "comfyrumps" padded knickers. i'm not laughing, sounds v. painful!
or get a new saddle with a calfskin or waterbuffalo seat, softer and more comfy. some saddles feel like a lump of wood to sit on to me, i like a bit of squish personally. the wow saddle i just tried had the comfiest seat i've ever sat on, lovely and squishy and sticky. i could have sat there all day!

thongs are good, you just feel that they`re not there.next best thing to nothing.
think mahoosive keks would get all crinckled up.

There was a similar post to this a while ago. Think people suggested seamless knickers or shorts as these didn't ride up, ruck or chafe.

Might be your saddle or do you ride for hours? (and get sweaty) - don't answer that one! Perhaps a dusting of talc would be better than Vaseline and a load less slippery!

Can't say I suffer myself, I go for BIG knickers and find my Ideal WH saddle really comfy, like sitting in an armchair. Maybe your saddle makes you perch forward a bit? I do know what you mean, I used to get it from a bike saddle.

seat saver? this was mentioned last night and just remembered, must look for one, next question - do seat savers come as "one size fits all"? guess ill soon find out if i do some searching!

Have I ever been for a drink with you!

.... what did I say about vaseline!!! perhaps all the other peeps on here dont go for loooooooooooooong rides and mainly school. I sit on my seat bones and that was one of my probs as after one of my loooong rides they hurt as I am bony in that area, so I suppose I compensate by shifting my weight and causing chaffing in other areas ...... I am sure there are others out there with similiar problems as we are all made so differently!!! ... also think its also to do with getting overheated down in that area! .... Seat savers tend to come in one size.
I tried riding in a thong and that was pain at its worst .... also in a body and its not much fun if you leave the poppers done up ha ha

Not me - I have ridden for week stretches and never had that problem - sore seat bones, sure, but no chaffing and deffo no probs with the front bottom area

.... thinking about it, it depends on the horse I am riding, since I dont ride my old boy now like I use to .... weeks on end like you Weezy, (but I did get off to go to bed
tongue.gif
) ... anyway a couple of the old boys I ride (always seem to be riding my friends old horses whilst they ride their youngsters!) seem to need to be 'pushed on' and I am not used to that, so must me using the wrong 'bits' .... seems like I must learn to ride properly!

I haven't had this problem and I used to ride for hours and hours each day (worked at event yard schooling etc). Can I suggest cotton rich knickers, jods with a higher cotton content, and perhaps a leather rather than a synthetic saddle (to allow air to circulate more) or perhaps a sheepskin (not nylon seat saver?
And try not to 'thrust and grind' on a lazy horse - use your leg and smack it if it doesn't respond to that.
Nasty problem!

I get sore seatbones, but then my saddle's rock hard!!

Def try seat saver - I'd prob want to blame the seat of the synthetic saddle - any 'movement' in the saddle can't 'move' so much, just chafe?!

Has anyone seen the 'card' by Lesley Bruce? It has a lady sat on the floor with 'i love dressage ' on her t-shirt and a bag of frozen peas held in the said 'nether' regions!!!
I think its safe to say that it is something some people do suffer this way.
The right pants are vital!!! Saddles have an effect but also some breeches; the full seat types some times have seems that finish in the wrong place!!

Cant believe noone has mentioned the Heather Moffet seat saver- its a (love)lifesaver

They are about £40 ( feedmark or equestrian clearance warehouse are 2 of many who do them) My oldest one is on its tenth hunting season and anyone who has ridden my cob has bought one. They are sooooo much better than the sheepskin ones as you dont overheat in the summer and the suede stops you sliding around

When you go on a long hack, is it all in walk?

I think I know the problem you mean as I have been known to suffer similar in the past on long (4 hours ish) rides. If I trot every now and then, it doesn't happen. I assume it's something to do with sitting in the same position for such a long time. Also, proper cotton undies that fit more snugly are best. I used to wear panties that were a little big and they'd ride up. Since I started wearing "sports pants", combined with the trotting, it no longer happens even on the longest of rides.

"Front burn" happens when someone is tilted forward at the pelvis and not sitting on their seat bones. Either that, or they're squashed up against the pommel of their saddle. "front burn" should never happen.

its only on our bottoms, not the seatbones or "front bums" or "nether regions". have been told today its also an occupational hazard for runners and cyclists and am waiting on a "rescue remedy" to apply beforehand. no my rides arent all in walk, my boy probably wishes that they were! i only ever wear one style of pants for riding, cotton ones and i always wear jodphurs. i never ever kick on with my seatbone, i actually saw my OH doing that this weekend and told her to sit back and use legs not "ride with her f*nnybones" haha but maybe if i did and leant forward more onto that area it would transfer the problem haha.

Same here, not something I have ever had a problem with. But agree, riding in a thong and cut you to bits- literally!!!!!
