3 Year old lame Abcess !

B---d- weather my baby was a little foot sore with all this wet even though I have good paddocks then he wen't lame in front foot (Thinking Abcess) Farrier suggested we leave it and it might come right and he didn't wan't to upset him digging !! would it be ok to give him a Bute I know this will mask it but apart from that he's very chearfull thanks for help.

I have always given bute for an abscess but having read on here I wouldn't bother again as I'm not sure they really help with the pain (didn't seem to make a difference to my horse but I felt I was doing something) and also because they are anti inflammatory they may delay it coming out (don't quote me on this)

Ideally If I were you I would soak the hoof in hot water and epsom salts and then hot poultice and turnout for a day or so to see if it bursts through with movement. Shires poultice boots are a godsend for turning out.

In my horses case he goes hopping non weight bearing on the bad hoof lame so I have always had to have a vet asap to dig for it because he was in that much pain i couldn't leave him.

Thanks for that, I did give him some bute last night and he seems better on it there is no heat in said foot so i'm wondering if he has just brused it will keep a special eye on it farrier is aware and even he says give it a bit longer, thanks.
