I'd say go for it so long as you've considered the implications and logistics of arranging vettings and transport to get home again should you like and buy
not mad! i did a 300 mile round trip to view my horse, plus we diverted about 200 miles to pick up a car for my OH, through London traffic after the viewing. i had seen advert of horse, liked the look of him, printed off the advert and left it by the computer, anyway this picture of the horse kept catching my eye and i just knew i had to have him! after lots of contact with his owner went to view him and then a week later did the 300 mile trip to pick him up - and i'm so chuffed with him, it was well worth it
Nope - not mad at all - I have done a 6hr round trip and an eight hour round trip - bought both of them. The 6 hr one we then got a transporter to pick up and the 8 hour one we agreed to meet half way and unload and re-load the pony in motorway services - luckily he was a good loader!!
You could be totally mad and do what we did with my eldest daughter's newest horse - he was a 12 hour round trip away and I was due to have a baby any time so we bought him and got a transporter to bring him home without trying him or even clapping eyes on him in the flesh - so far - touch wood - it seems to be working out!!
If he turns out to be your horse of a lifetime then 6 hours is nothing!
the only thing I would say is its probbly easier to see a youngster, as in not ridden yet. I have done over 1200 miles looking for horses and asked every question under the sun!! So much so each time I was almost certain they would be the right horse, I did find one but it failed vetting. However I too am thinking of doing a 7 hour round trip to see yet another one. going to think about it carefully first tho
I did a 400 mile round trip to look at a pony, just because it might have matched up with our other pony in a driving pair. It wasn't sound. That was just because what we wanted was so specific, I'd never travel more than two hours away to view a general riding horse, there are millions to choose between within that radius, little white driving ponies are harder to come by.
We did an 800 mile round trip for our little orange horse and took the trailer with us! She was a baby too and completely unspoilt. I'd had videos and stuff so was fairly sure we wanted her and she is still with us over 6 years later so it was a worthwhile trip!
QR I did three and a half hours each way to see and buy the big mare and four and a half each way to buy Flynn. Both were bought through here. I'd seen two pics of the mare and spoken to both her owner and Blackhawk who showed her to me and with Flynn henryhorn had sent me loads of pictures and I spoke to a couple of other HHOers who had seen and ridden him.
The mare took a while to grow on us, but she ticked all the boxes so we bought her. When we went to see Flynn my daughter fell in love at her first sight of him!
We travelled around the whole of uk to find none of them were suitable and we put up a wanted add and ended up with my dream girls only half hour drive away, however i would go for it
I travelled all the way to Spain to look at a horse. THe one I went for wasn't suitable but we had a look at a horse on the way back to the airport and he turned out to be the one! I got a few funny looks at the airport being in all my riding gear! Go for it! My horse was worth every mile of the trip and more.
