"Nikolas Macko was in a mathematics class in Norris Hall when they heard a series of loud bangs in the hallway which prompted a female student sitting near the door to move to close it.

"She peeked out into the hallway, and saw the shooter, so she immediately closed the door. Three other students moved a table that was in front of the room - it seats approximately 40 students at capacity - and barricaded it against the door.

"A few seconds later, the shooter tried to open the door, but my classmates kept it well shut, as they held the table against it from floor level."

Yes it would seem that way!.Nobody is safe!.Schools/collages will be like fork knox to get into (which isent a bad thing) but why should kids/teenagers have to be fingerprinted every time they go to class.

I really do not think it is that inconcievable when you look at American culture - we are a culture based on an eye for an eye. After 9/11 there was a sentiment among many (classless) Americans to bomb the hell out of anything arab - we felt pain so they should too! If you look at this story on many American forums you will see many people say they wish they could revenge the pain of this event on the shooter.

But what they do not realise is that this man has been suffereing mentally from society - whether it is bullying, pressure, etc. He is taking his pain of that out in a form of this massacre.

What America needs to do look at mental illness as we would a physical illness. If you friend seems down, discuss it like you friend has just said they feel dizzy. In America mental illness is very taboo, not discussed among people even in their families, let a lone outside them - once it is OK to say I am feeling depressed and yoru friend takes you to someone to talk about it, the better, and then we will see an end to these tragic events.!

There are always psycho, deranged nutters who are happy (with or without their meds) to kill someone. It is not always dependant on society to forsee this.
It is absolute bullshit to suggest that the States are to blame because they do not see mental illness as 'one would see a physical illneess'
Too many unfortunates are left to fend for themselves, but as ever, it is cash, not colleagues that help.
Tragic events will NOT end by talking to someone - that view is both implausibly simplistic and facile.

I am not saying the states are to blame, but our culture creates these situation - the numbers of school shooting we have had compared to any other country makes this an undeniable fact.

I personally believe that society making mental illness so taboo is a huge contributor to these crimes - much like Columbine I am sure there were many tell tale signs.

I agree that the American culture does have to have some responsibility. Not because they may not recognise mental illness, but simply because they are against foregners from the Far East, I think they will treat them suspiciously simply because of all the tension that has been caused between the USA and Iraq.

The USA has a massive gun crime problem. We dont see many similar shooting here or in many other countries simply because most of us dont have guns! Over there, everybody has one (usually to "protect themselves"). Guns are far more readily available and accepted. I think they have to address this, get rid of all the guns = less people dying.

Overall though, everybody always points fingers in these situations. Ive read that they are also blaming the fact that the boy played shoot-'em-Up games and also liked Marilyn Manson....... but you could go on all day coming up with WHY he was messed up in the head.

apparently he had already come in the school and shot 2 people - but the school didn't close down. and when he came back to hours later he shot another 31 people, but there were no police (??????) surely if a gunman had entered the school the first time round and fled the police would've been called??? and the school shut down?? it is so sad that this has to happen to innocent people who were just at school and work xxxx

Canada has a higher gun per capita ratio - it is not the guns that cause the problems, it is the mindset of Americans that make guns dangerous.

I guess they thought the first one was an isolated incident.

I think it is just so awful what can happen now days. And the fact that it was in a campus is even worse. What I don't understand is why the campus wasn't closed down as soon as the two dead bodies were found? I know an email was sent around and unfortunatly was recieved too late

Another thing that beats me is the fact that guns in America can be sold so easily to anyone - obviously within an age limit??? I really do feel for all the families, and parents who lost there children. R.I.P. Lets just hope nothing too awful will happen next

He popped into the gun shop to get the hand gun with which he shot all the people with.

It took about five minutes.

Apparently there was a form with a box 'Do you have a mental illness?' He ticked No and got the gun.

They probably have a similar thing in the hardware store before buying an Axe. "Do you require the axe for a) Chopping wood. b) Hacking your family to bits."

Exactly I mean it's pretty mad allowing anyone to buy a gun. You would have thought something would have been done with the gun rule seeing as there have been other school shootings in USA!!

But is it guns? Canada has more guns per capita than the US - why do we not see the problem there.
