Personally I would much rather live in the US with our gun 'problem' than in England with your 'YOB culture' problem! I feel far safer in the US, than I ever did in the UK!

Really???
I feel way safer in the UK and think that YOB culture is no where near as bad as the US gun problem.
I live in the US, and actually live within an hour of the university where these attacks happened. I know several students there and thankfully they are all safe and back at home now.
According to Virginia Tech, they thought the gun man had fleed campus after the first two students were killed in the dormitory. In reality he had gone back to his dormitory and it is assumed he then recorded the short films which have been airing on television since last evening.
Then about 2 hours after the first attacks he attacked again in "Norris Hall" which holds many class rooms, where he took 30 more lives and then his own life.
I really do not know anything about YOB culture other than what it is, but I do live in America and know a lot about the "gun problem." Yes there is a problem but in my opinion not a huge one. Of course there are terrible and horrific acts like those that took place at VA Tech on Monday, but crazy people like that would get guns and ammunition if it was legal or not. Gun rights should not be the issue focused on with this and unfortunately it is. After all, universities in America are supposed to be 100% Gun-free zones and look what happened! We should focus on keeping guns out of school grounds, and focus on the saftey of schools and plan for horrific events like this, not argue over who has the 'right' to own guns.

Is it the fact you've got more chance of getting your head stuffed with lead that makes you feel safer?
I would be interested in your view on the showing of Cho's video on the news. I thought it was wrong to show it, it sensationalises and trivialises a truly dreadful event. If I was a parent of one of the victims I would be sickened by it. Publish the transcript by all means, but giving the murderer the coverage he so desperately craved seems just wrong.
Just heard the debate about that on the news on the radio Sooty, and I totally agree with you. It only give the message to others in a similar state of mind, that if they go out guns blazing then they'll get the same opportunity to tell the world how "wronged" they've been
And yes, it must be devastating for the victims families.
Those poor victims can't speak from their graves can they?!
I personally found the videos incredibly disturbing - far too disturbing to show on US TV. By showing it they are fulfilling his wishes, he wanted them to show it, allows him to go down in a blaze of glory, could be motivation for others, and showed the world he compared himself to Jesus Christ and how NBC is trying to justify it, or even thinks it could be right is just beyond comprehension.
Jem having lived in both the US and the UK I can honestly say I feel SO much safer. None of my friends have been victims of crime out here, no one in our neighbourhood locks their house, etc.
Ereiam_jh - I and none of my friends have ever seen a shooting, stabbing, or even a gun or knife in public. Considering I have only a few friends in England and know a couple who have had knives and similar pulled on them for muggings you will not convince me life is better under strict UK gun laws.
Just out of interest, if you think so much more of the US than you do of the UK, why did you come back here to do your degree?
Just interested in your reasons.
I got accepted on an accelerated course - allowed me to graduate at the age of 19. Also most of my opinions were established while I was in the UK at University, before then I was too young to make my own opinions.

Wow, really? I find that pretty crazy TBH. I have lived in the UK my whole life but also spent a lot of time in the US. I have yet to experience ANY crime here in the UK, whereas in the US, we had a man wake us up in the middle of the night standing in our bedroom obviously wanting to steal. Also, next door has has their home broken into and things stolen...... Hmmm..... safe?! Me thinks not! I wouldnt lock my house or even my car here (but then I do live in the country) but wouldnt even dream of that in the US. I lock the door even when Im in the house in the US!
I think "Yobs" are still a TAD safer than armed gangs in the US..... Of course we have crime here as does everywhere. But it isn't very often that someone is actually killed. You cannot possibly say that it is no safer here with our gun laws?!!
Its so incredibly sad we live in this world alongside pure evil, evil should be eradicated, thoughts go to all those killed and their families, its tragic
