Hi, I don't post in here very often. I have a lovely GSD who is now 12 years old. For the last couple of years I've had accident only dog insurance with 3rd party insurance included but I'm now considering whether to self insure due his age etc. I think it would be a good idea to have 3rd party liability insurance. We go on walks in public twice a day and we take him away with us on holiday a few times a year to friends or holiday cottages. He has never shown any aggressive tendencies to people or dogs and is well behaved hence wondering if it's something I should have or if I'm overthinking. What are your thoughts on this? Should I have 3rd party insurance? Does anyone know where I can get 3rd party only or where it's included in some sort of membership (a bit like BHS/pony club membership)?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the replies.

I'll check my house insurance. I went to look at the Dog's Trust website and spent an hour going through the 37 GSDs available for rehoming instead of looking at insurance :p Not that I want another right now but a couple are quite tempting.

Definitely make sure you have 3rd party liability insurance as a dog owner can be sued if their dog causes harm to someone in quite a large variety of ways, not just by biting- e.g. if they get onto a road and cause a car accident, or if they run past a person on a walk and accidentally knock them over. I don't think enough owners understand how important it is. And hopefully having the insurance will mean that you will never need it!
