Hi

Does anybody know of any makes apart from Equi Trek that makes this size box? We need it to carry to horses and have a 2tonne payload?

Budget upto about 20k

It feels i am looking for something that is not there! We dont want to go upto 7.5t as its too big!

All i can find is 3.5 or 7.5

Thanks :)

I hired a 5.5 ton box, it was fantastic to drive. It was the only one my 18.1 monster fit in with ease. I fairly sure that was made by peper harrow

There are a number of builders of these horseboxes. The best ones will build on a chassis pan cab. This is a vehicle that is supplied as a chassis and cab. NOT a conversion of a van (integral container). Don't get one of these.
A company that specialises in these which is based in North Hertfordshire is called Equestria Horse Boxes Grange Farm Newmarket Road Royston Herts SG8 7PR Tel: 01763 208908 Tel: 01763 208430 I believe Pepper Harrow have an excellent reputation.

I don't have personal experience of any of these companies, they just came up when I was looking to replace my horsebox (in the end I kept my old one):

When I was looking I found that many of the so called bespoke manufacturers could not accommodate what I wanted. They were very keen to push a 3.5t or 7.5t chassis and even then the layout was exactly what they had done before - very inflexible!

I have got a 6.5 tonne Pepper Harrow Horsebox which as long as you are over 25 you can drive on normal license. It's got a payload of 2.5 tonnes. I'm thinking of selling of mine. I'll pm you.

I think you will find the lack of suitable chassis is the limiting factor
there isnt many apart from the iveco and renaults neither are very common or popular as they arent
very nice to drive, and are just considered over grown vans for urban work or utility like council tippers or recyling vehicles, and not very common in the haulage industry!!, there are a lot more new, nearly new, or used 7.5 chassis at a fair price so any one building/converting lorrys tends to go for them as they make a better nicer to drive and hence more saleable horsebox ..

A matter of taste I suppose but I have an Iveco Daily 5.2t which comes in 4 wheelbases and can be bought in other tonage as well and it's a dream to drive. Without a horse in, it's almost as easy as a car, good turning circle, power assisted steering, good acceleration, etc., with horses in it's very stable and never scary in the wind/when you're being overtaken in the motorway. Personally I think it's a really good compromise between having a massive truck or a flimsy van.

When I was looking to replace mine I was looking at new chassis so I could have whatever I wanted and still companies were reluctant to move off their usual models. They told me they would have to redo all their calculations and specs and they were not willing to - bit of a surprise for a supposedly bespoke service at an exorbitant price!

horse area's look great... but and not just yours, the lutons and living quarters have a long way to go especially when compared with motor homes, hopefully a motorhome builder will enter the race truck and horse box market and then things will move forward .....

I am looking for a 5.5/6 tonne chassis to have a wagon built. My OH won't go near the Ivecos unfortunately so we are somewhat limited. Even the newer Ivecos look so dated, it is a real shame.

Yes I would agree however I would say the Iveco is the best of a very limited bunch if you realy want that smaller type of lorry. Ive seen some of these 65c18 built as motorhomes with the cab opened up by removing part the cab roof and the back so you can stand up and the seats turn round into the living, the luton bit has a removeable bed base if you want to sleep up there, it fills the gap. they have a roomy luton bit which extends well over the front, all this makes them look much better inside, the cab no longer feels small and cramped .. If someone who builds horse boxes would copy that sort of design then it would be impresive .. sadly all the ones ive seen have a small cut thru in the back of the cab and a tiny ugly luton tacked on the front of the box...
