4 dead 2 injured

Running today as at 7th June is 2834 deaths in 6323 days. It works out 2.2 deaths a day by my calculations. It's a horrendous figure when you think about it. The 3 yr old that collapsed and died on 1st June. How? Why?

Lingfield and Southwell are the courses with the most fatalities. How are these deemed more dangerous? Is it because they run more horses/races therefore the greater chance? Is it the going?

Infograph for 2023

2834 is an horrendous figure but that doesn't equal 2.2 deaths a day. Still far too many tho. Sorry cannot open your screenshot to look at the figures as I am struggling with very little broadband.

Sorry I divided 2834 by 6323 to get 2.2 instead of the other way around. Was always bad at maths at school 🤣🤣

Whatever the reason its not acceptable and surely at some point will ring the final bell, some people believe there is no such thing as a coincidence too many people involved with horse who do not understand them how they pass on faults how to judge the going etc

I wonder if the heat played a part? That level of loss is unacceptable imo. Can you imagine the outcry if Badminton had four deaths in a day, or Olympia?
Exactly. Why I am totally against racing. Totally unacceptable but yet again these deaths will be brushed under the rug. IMO racing is damaging all equestrian sport.

I think the stories about training practices in dressage yards is damaging all equestrian sport - there seems to be no governing organisation checks on horse or staff welfare at yards whereas training yards are licensed and inspected.

Absolutely agree, that is also horrific and hopefully things are changing and more awful people are coming out of the woodwork which surely is a good thing. I dont see anything changing to put a stop to the deaths of all these racehorses though.

Interesting that this enquiry team is now to be made permanent. It has been operating since last autumn investigating every racehorse death on course and within 2 days of racing.

Very good news if the reports continue to be made available to the public.

4 so far this month 😪

And what makes it worse is that three of them were only 3 years of age. The other was a 4 year old. They shouldn't be raced this young, their bodies are too weak. It's disgusting, at least give them a fighting chance.

These poor babies. What a waste of a life, and to die terrified and in agony on a racetrack. It's not fair. They have no choice in it all. Falling for you earned his owners £7800 before he died. Blood money.

Reveal was 3 yrs and 4 months old and had already raced 11 times prior to his accident. 11 times! The twelfth being his final and barely mentioned demise.

Not racing but...
Recently fence judged at a new BE event where we were briefed to be particularly aware of the social contract. We were told to report:
1. Any one handed strike of the whip after jumping a fence;
2. More than one handed strike of the whip before a fence;
3. Any horse being over pressed when seeming tired and not pulled up;
4. Any rider impeding a horse due to not being competent at the level they were competing at;
5. Any horse going away from a fence looking impeded after hitting a fence hard and not being pulled up.
Listening to the radio chatter and the PA announcements all the riders who were reported were called to the secretary's tent presumably to be questioned, advised or bollocked/sanctioned in some way. Thankfully there were not that many but this is absolutely the sort of measures we should be putting in place to prevent an outcry over the perception of the exploitation of horses in sport and also to root out those who do and make us all look bad.

I hate racing...
Owners and trainers don't give a s......

The lads usually cares for the horses but they can't do anything..

Wish it would stop one day, i know it's a huge industry employing lot's of people but they would surely find something else to do.
