My 4yr old mare developed lumps in saddle area about 4 months ago, i got vet out, she said to wash regular, it didnt work, she got a bit wheezy, got vet again given ventapulmin, lumps still present, but vet not concerned, kept washing, tried hibiscrub diluted, maleseb, teatree, antibacterial, antihistamine tablets, antihistamine creams, hair is coming out, some lumps are quite large and hard othets are like hard bumps, now trying global herbs pollen ex, they dont seem any worse after riding but i wonder if its uncomfortable for her. Also tried a fly rug.

I know of horse that had same problem it was diagnosed as blocked pores in the end. Owner use mild hydrocortisone on them and they eventually disappeared. The key was keeping area clean and using clean numnahs because sweat can block the pores.:)

Yes he was fine. Vet told me to try it :) he had a large lump under his saddle and one on his side. I tried everything on them. Washed his numnahs every use etc but nothing worked.

Ok will just keep washing her! I do change numnah regularly but has been warm so shes prob sweating more

By washing with a chemical too regularly you're destroying the natural oils in the coat so sometimes, especially if it could be blocked pores then you need to brush it well to get the circulation going properly, a decent massage can work wonders in helping and you can do that yourself either just your hands or a cloth rolled up tight.
A condition like this seems to come from within so if you get the diet right that should help you get healthy skin; good for this are things like micronised linseed and brewers yeast; the linseed for the oils in it and the yeast to settle the gut to help the digestion work properly. Wash numnahs every time you use them don't miss on that either.

She had micronised linseed brewers yeast and devils claw mixed in feed for 2 months with no change, have tried oilatum shampoo today and that has calmed it down, i looked at different feeds , suppliments, tried herbal natural shampoos, brushing, not brushing infact i think its been going on longer than 4 months i posted about it before, and it did go for a month!

Have you looked at Feedmark for supplements in that case? A friend used one years ago for something similar and it helped no end, came in a big sack but I can't remember the name, sorry. Have you tried allergy tests? I've had nothing to do with them so don't know if they're expensive or not but might be worth a try.

Wow 4 months is a long time with no improvement! If you have tried a variety of lotions & potions & supplements etc and still aren't having any luck, then I would suggest asking your vet to do a proper allergy test (the ones where a patch of hair is shaved off and they inject different allergens to find the trigger). It will save you lots of expense, effort and stress in the long run if they are able to tell you what's causing it :)

have used oilatum shampoo for 2 days now and there is improvement yeyy it is supposed to help with the ph of the skin etc and remove build up so shouldnt remove the natural oils etc, i am greatful for everyones help and recommend trying it, i only use things after reading up about it. considering the lumps were quite large and very hard i was wondering if anything would ever shift them, some hair had gone where the saddle had rubbed and left bare patches too i hope the hair will come back.
