We have a horse with a sudden swelling of all 4 legs. They are filled with fluid from mid canon down to the pastern, with a little heat, but not obvious, and tender to the touch. He is not lame, not standing in a laminitic stance, or looking ill or dejected, just very reluctant to move. He lives out 24/7, has been on the same pasture for 4 months and gets ad lib hay which he shares with 4 other horses (none of whom have any swelling), his diet has not changed - he is fed a very small quantity of chaff and mix daily, he is not shod and does not have mud fever or any other sign of injury. He is not overweight and is exercised regularly. His blood tests have all come back normal and he has been on bute for 3 days with no visible reduction in the swelling, although it is helping him move. We are all stumped - including the vet as it is unusual to see this in all four legs... Any ideas?

My TB was like this recently, it was a protein overload but once I discovered what he'd been eating I knew what it was. Other than that a reaction of some kind? Things are starting to grow, anything growing in the field that he could have been near?
Is your field by the road, could someone have fed him something?

Did your vet mention anything about lymphangitis? is it mostly in the hind legs or if your horse stocking up the same in all four?

obviously reading the other threads there can be more than one cause, with mine it was a virus and vet treated it with aloe vera juice which worked great

Mine had this all 4 legs filled up and it's because they have eaten something they are allergic to and the reaction has gone to the legs because they don't have great drainage the toxins go there. Goes off after a few days.
