Please can anyone advise me on buying a 4 x 4 ?

I have a livery arriving from Norway in a months time and she has asked me to find her a car before she arrives.

It needs to be good on fuel as she will use it everyday but wants to tow a trailer with one horse on board.

Any suggestions of make and model or what engine size? and breaking power is needed?

I have a Freelander, which I love. Have bought a lorry now, but was happily towing one horse in a Ifor Williams 505 with no trouble at all. Also reasonably priced to run for a 4x4 as I do very high mileage to work also.

Think they tow about 1.8t with a breaked trailer.

Make sure you find a good one though, as I keep hearing horror stories about how the older ones go wrong :-)

Would happily exchange mine for a Freelander 2, but can't afford too!!
 
Discovery? I've got one which is brill to tow and on longer runs it does about 35mpg (although thirsty on shorter trips) its 2.5 diesel would easily tow 510 & horse.

you may need to look at driving licence intitlement and the insurance issues before getting a tow car... and yes need a budget but I guess cheaper £1500 up a daihatsu fortrak, pajero , discovery or at a push a volvo V70 estate, big old merc etc , more cash a shogunor simalar.. needs to be 2.5 litre+ and be rated to tow about 2000kg for one horse in a double trailer, a little less for a one horse trailer or about 2800kg for two horses...oh and good on fuel and safe for towing dont go together...

Freelanders are not suitable for towing a horse as they are not heavy enough. You most certainly won't be road legal or safe.
 
Toyota Landcruiser.... The best car i have ever had... it will easily tow an HB510 with two horses in.

Had a Discovery before this and it was constantly breaking down... (and it was only 18 months old...!)
 
Toyota Surf (bridges the gap between the little RAV4 and the bigger and more expensive Landcruiser). It's a 5 door estate version of the Hilux Pickup (indestructible!). Mine is a 3.0TD Auto. The 2.4 version would be too gutless for towing.

It's not good on fuel, but it's done 167000 km (it's an import so it's in km not miles), and it's a 1994 model. You should get one much younger within budget.
 
you can tow one horse in a trailer with a freelander legaly and safely if they come in under 1800kg which one horse in a 510 would be they are bulit to tow 2ton but cant legaly as too light. i wouldn't have one as too un reliable.
I have just been looking at grand vitaras they tow up to 1850kg in price range but not very gutsey
