Hi, anyone tow with either a VW tiguan, Vauxhall antara, Honda CVR - one lightweight trailer approx 800, 1 or 2 ponies max 500 - these are vehicles i can choose on a lease so limited what i choose - need to be able to tow on and off showgrounds , any advice on these appreciated but don't have the option of different cars, thanks

Don't know about the other two but the Honda is used by a friend to pull 2 horses in her Ifor Williams and she has no problem.
Has been on show fields and everywhere.

We have a Freelander 2 to tow my trailer, highly recommend it if you can get one on lease though...

I wouldn't have said the CRV had adequate towing capability at all but maybe I am wrong! I seriously doubt the Antara does though as i don't think it is designed with actual 'work' in mind. I would have thought out of those the Tiguan would have been the most likely to tow?

No actualty idea though! :)

I tow a double ifor with a diesel crv, with 16.2 horse and it copes ok, mine has a 1500kg towing limit, as an 2005, a newer one may take more? I wouldn't want to take two horses in mine, unless they were small ponies.
Having said that, I do love my Honda, it's a very civilised drive car for work, enough space in boot for 2 bales of hay, and as a diesel fairly economical. Also 4x4 runs only when needed, e.g a field, which also helps day to day economy.

I think the VW tiguan's are quite thirsty on the fuel. I'm sure that's what we had on hire from work. Lovely car but drank the fuel.

Are you intending to tow under B or B+E licence rules?

is this legal though

I use a VW Tiguan to tow a IW506 trailer, plus one horse (either 15hh 450kg or 15.3hh 500kg). The combined weight of the trailer plus one horse, together with tack and one passenger, is around 80% of the maximum towing weight for the vehicle, and I have had no problems coping with steep hills (up OR down!). I would disagree with an earlier post, which said that the Tiguan was very thirsty. I use mine for everyday commuting/running around, and get an average of 45mpg. That decreases to about 39-40mpg when towing. Obviously, it would be nice to be able to have the extra towing capacity of a Discovery, for example, but I wouldn't be able to justify the extra running costs.
I have only had the Tiguan for one year, but it is a very nice vehicle - glad I chose it. Hope this is helpful.

I think this member means 80% of the GTW (max legal actual weight of the trialer + vehicle combined when weighed together) and not 80% of the towing capacity
