Okay, somehow my first post on this hasn't made it on here, must have pressed the wrong button! D'oh!

Anyway, sure this has been done lots of times before but i find the search thing a bit hard work.

Am looking at investing in a 4 x 4 (approx £3.5k) for everyday and towing. Would like to hear people's stories, opinions on ones they've owned/do own with regards to running costs, reliability, fuel consumption etc. Am liking the look of the smaller Toyotas like the Colorado. Although will be looking at 5 seater and not the monster 7/8seaters

Anyone got an older Land Rover Discovery? Not into the Freelanders.

Thanks for any help anyone gives on this

if you are looking for a tow vehicle then you will need something capable of towing the weight.Unfortunately this rules most if not all of the smaller 4x4 out totally. I have just brought a ford maverick 2.7td and so far its great. It drives like a car unlike most of the bigger 4x4's and does 28mpg while towing and can pull 2.8T. You will need a LWB vehicle to be able to tow a horsebox as most of the SWB 4x4's are no more capable than the average family saloon car.
I was told by loads of previous owners of discovery's to steer well clear of them.I know of several people who have had major repair bills with them.

I have an Isuzu Trooper 3.1 turbo diesel. Had her for 5 yrs and fab car, tows like a dream and good on fuel, insurance. Its the short wheel base one and seats 5. Has never let me down and fairly economical to run. Absolutely love her!

My theory is, try to get something as new as possible - therefore less to go wrong/repairs needed.

I wouldnt buy a second hand car older than a couple of years if I didnt know the owner/wasnt from a dealer. Only because when something goes on a 4x4 it is going to cost a lot, especially if the car has been used to tow, you dont know how knackered the engine might be.

For your budget, have a look at the Nissan teranos - they are quite good to tow with, and depending on weight, you could get away with SWB. Parts etc might be a bit expensive but they are pretty reliable. Otherwise have heard good reports about the Isuzu.

I was looking at a 52 plate one of those and wondered what they were like.

Thanks for all the suggestions/information, keep it coming, very helpful

My hubby is a professional Roadside Assistance Service Patrol and he looks after Suzi Trooper for me and has this advice, "dont get a Trooper thats not a 3.1 diesel as the 3litre engines fuel injection seals are prone to failure" My Suzi is older (N reg) and I am lucky that he does any work she needs. Nothing major has failed and 5 yrs on I still love driving her, it will be a sad day when she has go to the Car Graveyard, haha. Shes also fab in snow, had to pull other cars out when it was bad in Winter.

Hope that helps you
