I'm in the market for a 4 x 4 again. I owned an vauxhall monteray 3.1TD RS for 10 years and it never gave me a day's worry. It pulled a trailer with ease and allthough not the most stylish of 4 x 4's was a great ' workhorse ' I only sold it on 6 months ago as my husband said it was about time it went ( and I very foolishly listened to him) and it was replaced with a large estate car. However, I've had enough and I want a 4 x 4 again.

I have limited funds ( 5K) and was wondering about a Landrover Discovery TD5, Manual Diesel. 2000/2001 reg. What are your views and experience of thease vehicles? Please do not offend me by suggesting a Freelander, I simply will not have one lol

My husband does most of the car mechanics in our house and he says that Landrover parts are relatively cheap. So he's happy to pay for parts.

If any of you can recommend a good 4 x 4 which will be used every day come rain, shine or snow ( !! ) I would be interested to hear your views. Thanks
 
I loved my Discovery, it had a few phoebles (sp) but it did everything I wanted it to do and WHEN I wanted to do it. Sadly a woman in a Fiesta drove into me and wrote it off (how embarrassing is that!). I am currently driving the other-halfs Freelander which is NOT the same! He meanwhile has bought himself a '53 plate Discovery - which he has consented I can have when I need to tow the horses about! Mind you I now have more money in the bank as I am not filling up a Discovery every week AND he filled his new one up last week and guess what - it cost £98 (diesel)!!! Regarding the cost of buying a Discovery this one was twice as much as is being offered by the Insurance company for the write off, but it was a brilliant price as it ended up in a Honda garage and they didn't realise its worth (or maybe they were taking into consideration the price of fuel!!).
Meanwhile I am pushing a wheelbarrow with a half barrel of water across the field to 2nd trough instead of towing my little trailer around - perhaps better for the figure!
 
I like my Toyota Surf (imported version of a 4-Runner). Parts are reasonable, easy to fit (my OH isn't a mechanic and can do some stuff!). It's great on and off road, easy and comfortable to drive. It isn't the prettiest of 4x4's, but it is a proper old workhorse. I use mine every day (to and from the yard x2, fence judging at weekends, trips to the feed shop, and I've even managed to park it in Asda!).
 
Had a Landrover Discovery TDI 5 to be honest (C**p) Bought an Isuzi 3.1TDi Citation only sold it end of June as we don't need to pull anything anymore:( I would class this vehicle above any Discover they are pants at pulling when you have had an Isuzi.) They are quite cheap to buy if you look around it's just when you need a part but they are similar to a Vauxhall can't remember which that the parts cross:D
 
If you do get a Disco go and buy it somewhere where its unlikely to have ever done any hard work (places with too much money and not enough mud). That way it will have had an easy life to date....
 
I have an old shogun 2.8 diesel, and I love it, I have owned it for just over twelve months, its an N reg with no rust or wear, it like a brand new car inside and it has just passed an MOT with Flying colours. I paid £1400 for it and it has never ever let me down. Like one of the other posts has said a good clean older discovery is as rare as hens teeth.
 
I had a Disco until it got to old & changed it for a Range Rover.
The fuel comsumption is the same as the Disco so no different.
The only difference is that whereas the Disco was manual the Range Rover is an auto & a much better ride.
