4 x 4s.....

An Isuzu trooper, 3.1 - short wheelbase is easier to manage (esp with a trailer), but much more stash space in the long wheelbase! Love ours to bits, gets through any snow, is totally reliable (touch wood!) and has a 3.5tonne legal pulling limit. It pulls our 2 horse trailer with a 15.3 and 16hh hunter types in with ease.

I have the car that glosgirl has described, if you look after it, it will look after you :D and you may get a good one one for less than £3k

When my Suzu dies I am going to get a Toyota Hilux or Diahatsu Fourtrak or a Mitsubishi Shogun.

Love Fourtraks, excellent workhorses; just had to pension ours off (sadly body hadn't been looked after before we got it; have you any idea how corrosive cow muck is!? Engine still flies like a bird though and great for towing)
We've now got a Nissan Terrano 5 door. Son has had a commercial for 3 years and is still pleased with it which is what swayed us. Have to admit it's more comfortable, is as strong as an ox and also flies; too much really I can see OH coming back with a fistful of tickets some day!
Have a look on Autotrader, I've done a basic search for you to £3000. High mileage doesn't seem to be a problem at all to them either which helps. Never thought I'd recommend something else other than a Fourtrak!

I have a vauxhall monterey - its a re-badged trooper - everything is the same, other than the vauxhall badge (but hey, they tend to be cheaper than Troopers for some reason, so I put up with the badge!!).
I too have a 3.1 swb - its got to be one of the bigger swb around but it is very manageable. I love it.

ditto the Iszu trooper - we had one but it died. Also had a Mitsi Pajero - another brill. Now have Nissan Navara pickup which is amazing! and tonnes of room for all the junk - can pick up cheap but as they are commercials take care to not get one too battered!

We have had an M reg Trooper and a K reg Bighorn (imported Trooper but still RHD), K reg one was great for towing, but the head gasket went on it, - always make sure you check the oil and water regularly on these older cars! M one is ok, but I struggle to get it into 4wd without dislocating my shoulder!

I have got a suzuki vitara...doesn't tow a lot but will go anywhere...on any terrain..its the best thing since sliced bread to me!!

I have an R reg 3.1 Trooper and it's fab for towing. But I've had a lot of problems with it - gearbox (after 6 weeks, £1150 ), alternator, water pump, clutch, slave cylinder, etc etc - we call it the 6 million dollar jeep - we have rebuilt it! I have spent so much money on it that I can't possibly get rid of it because almost everything is new.

It was £5000 about 5 years ago but they are a lot cheaper now. And my friend has an LR Disco of the same age and hers looks a lot ropier than mine.

My first one was an old shape 2.8 and I never had a day's trouble with it. But one day, the power just died.

I think they are great jeeps and I've just been unlucky with mine but (touching lots of wood) I haven't had a problem with it for ages.

A friend of a friend has just picked up a V reg Trooper for about £1500.

I would recommend a pajero/shogun!

or failing that a nissan terrano.

Both well known as good towing cars and known to be reliable (ps try and go for an automatic too - you'll never go back!)

Oops sorry this is wrong, I think it was £2,800 not £1,500. But still in your budget.
