We hve just had our 4 yr old TB filly returned by the trainer, saying she is lame after the dreaded flexion tests and x-rays which show arthropathy in the right fetlok joint and total box rest recommened. She was very thin and poor condition when we arrived home, but they had not tested or treated her for gastric ulcers. We have now put her on a course of Gastrogard and our vet said ok to turn her out in a small paddock. She is now in a larger paddock and trotting around without a hint of lameness. She will have to be on field rest for a while but I was wondering if anyone can recommend a supplement we can put her on that will strengthen her joints while she is on field rest.

How was box rest supposed to help arthritis?

I recommend 4cyte, it does at least have some testing behind it and i saw pretty miraculous resolutionof joint inflammation.,

I've seen a lot of promising results with Boswellia for my lad who is retired due to arthritic hocks, stifles and hip. He is perfectly field sound without it, but I do notice his flexibility tends to drop dramatically without it. I do feed it with Turmeric and again I notice if he runs out of it - I know that Turmeric and Boswellia recommendations can ruffle a few feathers/ raise some eyebrows in the horsey world but I do find that it helped a lot and also there are a few added benefits like gastric health with Boswellia :)

If you're wanting to go down the route of MSM, Glucosamine etc, I can recommend BettaLife's PharmaQuin (I believe it's called!), I read a while ago that it has a lot of beneficial ingredients for joints but my rising 2 year old can't tolerate alfalfa which I believe is the base that they use (happy to be corrected if I'm wrong). There's also 4Cyte which has been used by many of my friends with great results - one thing to bear in mind though is that just because one supplement works for one horse doesn't guarantee it'll work for another :)
