I dont have horses but I was hoping that with all the experts on this forum I might be able to get some good advice

I have a 3door frontera sport which is a great little 4x4, the petrol engine starts first time, never had any problems and does the job...BUT theres the problem the job is to carry 3 dogs, one of which is 16st ! and I am finding the lack of split seat and 5 doors a pain

I only spent 700 on the frontera which Im sure I will get back and really dont want to spend more than 2k

Needs..decent 4x4, big boot, 5 doors, no need for green laning, great in winter and not bad in summer.

I have come across these three 4x4's which apparently are not as funny as they sound

Ssangyong Rexton 270 Xdi ( can get 06 plate for about 2k )
KIA Sorento 2.5CRDi ( can get a 04 plate for around £2k
Land Rover Freelander 2.0Td4 ( can get 51 plate for around £2k )

would love a Hilux or old landcruiser but probably asking for trouble at that price..

Any thoughts on these

Stay clear of the old style freelanders.

don't know anything about the SSangyong cars, how easy are parts to get hold of?

Given the option of those three Id personally go with the Kia.

Do you really need a 4x4 if you're using it for the reasons above? What about an 'all road' 4x4 type estate car?

Be really careful if you look at older Kua Sorrentos, we bought ond from a reputable dealer and it had a common fault yhat made it dangerous. For your budget and needs I would look at a mitsubishi L200 they are super workhorses and brilliant for putting dogs in as they are a pick up.

what was the 'common' fault that was dangerous

Bloody hell if you can find an 04 Sorento for £2k you're doing very well! I've just bought one for £4.5k, they're very nice cars but if I'd paid £2k for one it would have been a dog.

I was thinking the same. I have been looking at Sorrento's recently and couldn't find much for less than £4k.

It was a fault with the drive shaft. The car was sold to us with a brand new MoT by a main dealer but not kia. It had a minor issue with the immobiliser that required it to be returned to kia when kia checked it they declared it unroadworthy. It would have cost over £4k to get it right and we only paid about £5k, luckily it was under warranty so after a bit of a discussion with the seller they took it back and refunded it. When we googled it we found that it was a fairly common issue but one that kia wouldn't do a recall for so we decided not to look at another.

For that money I would be looking at an older Shogun, loads of room, downsides are pricey on parts and a bit juicy but good all round cars...also with the ridiculous N46 recall going on and if you don't want to tow look at a Jeep Cherokee, 5 doors and reasonable boot space and split rear seats, loads on the market for around 2k at the moment!!!

I would stay well clear of the ssangyong and the Kia. My present and previous are Jeep and before that I had a Daihatsu feroza, and they are good little 4x4's in their class, not comparabel to Jeep but i have a soft spot for them :-) after driving it for 3 yrs I got the same price at the same dealer I bought it from !

Thanks for all the replies so far ...I should have realised more would have been added...

Re the Jeep ( I had an old XJ ) the smaller ones are too small and I thought the grand cherokee didnt have a very good name ?

Also... what about a 3.0 toyota hilux.. not worried about fuel as it will only do around 5k a year ?
