Hi guys, I have noticed a few posts on here regarding the best sorts of cars for towing and I am looking for a mitsubishi pajero SWB 2.5/2.8 diesel, older discovery or a good, smaller 4x4 (not one of these long wheel base jobbies) when my car has gone at end of month.

Any ideas on cheap but trustworthy car dealers (if there is such a thing - no offence meant lol!) or does anyone have such a car that they are thinking of getting rid of ? ideally in the Suffolk or surrounding east anglian areas.

I dont want to spend a fortune (no more than £1500 tops)
Cheers guys

You don't really want a Pajero, you want a SWB Mitsubishi Shogun. The Pajero version is the one that has been imported so it won't be full UK spec, it often has odd mirrors and attachments on the window and blingy paintwork. Some insurance companies load the premium because of their spec. So look specifically for a Shogun. If you look on ebay you will see plenty of classified ads, rather than the usual bidding advert, then just go and drive it.

Actually, I would disagree with that. I had a shogun and lots of people I knew with Pajeros had higher spec. It's only a problem if you are importing it, then you have to make all the modifications to euro standard. Best to buy one that's already here and check it has the correct paperwork.

You will get a decent one for that money, whereas a shogun will probably be a rust bucket underneath.

the shogun was the basic spec pajero it was colt cars the uk mitsubisi importer that called it a shogun and got very very upset a few years later when people started importing them second hand, it wasnt very nice for them as they had been telling everone how good their shogun was! then people could see they had paid top dollar for a very basic car, then they got nasty saying things like the brakes were poor and they wernt safe!!! then japan got to hear about it and got realy upset about there uk importer saying they make substandard cars for the home market
I think one or more of the directors had to fall on there swords over it... my advice it dosnt matter what its called as long as its in good condition and will do your job take a mecanic to vet before you buy as most 4x4s have had a hard life...

thanks guys, I liked the SWB Pajeros as they are quite small and I didnt really want to have to drive a huge great thing as I have a multi story carpark. I have been told to check if the pajero imports have been undersealed as if not they can be rusty.
I liked the discoveries but most in my price range (£1500 iro) have nearly 200k miles - I know they last but I dont want something that is only going to last a year!

Would you be willing to travel my OH is part of a 4x4 club and they often have discos for sale we're in East Northamptonshire so depending on where in Suffolk you are might not be too far?

Let me know and I'll get him to ask around. I know a friend of his had a really lovely Isuzu Trooper for sale which are great towing cars.
