4x4 help please

Ive got a Land Rover Disco 2 TD5 and it pulls like a dream have to keep checking trailer still attached as it was so light still. lol
My one I got from my parents as I know all it's history and it is just brilliant BUT I am finding it too big for me so looking at getting a freelander now, shame as I trust this car cos I know everything about it.

Although wouldn't discount Terrano either I love them too... I had the swb years ago

i have a hyundai terracan 2.9ltr turbo diesel, its £245 tax for the year, mpg not great if on short journeys about 28-30, but it tows like a dream! i have an ifor williams 403 and a chunky connemara and you cant feel it! loads of space in the 4x4 and the thing i really like is the boot lifts up so you can stand under it if pouring with rain, whereas yo has a disco and cant open her boot right out if trailer hitched on due to the jockey wheel handle, friends freelander is the same, pain trying to get tack out of the boot!
also it got us everywhere in the snow, towed others in the snow and never got stuck anywhere! cant fault it, its a real work horse and i want another when this one ever dies!

Don't forget though if you get put on someone else's insurance you won't earn your own no claims meaning when you do come to insure your own vehicle it will still be hideously expensive.

As others have said you are better off getting something small, I had a polo for years and you'd be amazed at the amount of bales of bedding you can get in the back of those! You will still need to pass your trailer test I'm assuming so why not just get your dad to tow you for now? Xx

A few of the insurance companies are awarding no claims to named drivers these days, Tesco being one and can't remember the others..

What do you all think to a 1992 MITSUBISHI Shogun 2.5 GLS TD? I can get one in my budget and insurance would be about £1500 (may seem a lot to you guys but not bad for my age and only 1 yrs no claims!)

Trickivicki (or anyone with a Santa Fe - or experience of - or an opinion on!), what sort of mpg do you get out of a Santa Fe and how old is the vehicle?

I have a Land Cruiser & it's the dogs nuts. Prior to this I had a Disco which was good but not Land Cruiser standard.

It will do anything & everything you ask it to and you could probably pick up an older one reasonably cheaply. It also fitted 3 rotties in the back easily (sadly down to 2 now).

It's had no problem with the snow and ice over the last few winters and is the only vehicle other than a Defender that managed to get through the village to the yard. It tows like a dream, I tow an EquiTrek with 2 horses in and I don't even know it's on there.

On the downside however the tax on it is expensive I can't remember exactly but it's over £400 a year so that's something to bear in mind.

I second the Land Cruiser - absolutely brilliant - ours is 15 yrs old so the tax is only £215 and they are just sooo reliable - if you don't want to spend a fortune every year on maintenance - then Toyota is the way to go:D

Thankyou :)

Any opinions on the mitsubishi pajero?
Yes its what the mitsubishi importer calls a shogun most have a better spec and more extras than the bog standard shogun some insurance companys wont give a good quote dont lose heart shop around oh and as any s/h car get it checked over before you buy and a least a grease up and oil change ...

Nooo I know it's such a good car too especially as it was my parents for last 6 yrs and dad is a landrover mechanic so has been very well maintained.

I just want a smaller version - hence the freelander.
It isnt a smaller
version its piece of junk that wont tow a decent load safely or do much better on fuel..
and they are expensive to fix.. best left to the school run mums or hair dressers
stick with what you've got at least its a proper 4x4 not a car pretending to be one if you dont need to tow get a golf diesel or simalar it will do better on fuel and be nicer to drive and reliable :D

I think insurance wise the Pajero may be a bad choice with it being an import. Have you looked at the Nissan Navara pickup but with the closed back or the Nissan Patrol? I think the Navara would be classed as a commercial vehicle that's all and they would certainly be room for a big dog or two in the back i'm sure. No idea about towing ability though as cannot find a lot of info (although haven't really looked). The websites I have seen suggest the Pathfinder tows 2500kgs though.

I have no personal experience of either of these vehicles though!

If you do go for a shogun, try for the 2 door, SWB. They can tow 3.2t and because they are smaller, they are lighter, and a bit better on diesel. If you are very Lucky, you might find one without the rear side windows. These are also classed as commercial vans.

In that case, I would scrap the idea all together and get a little car. Use the money you save on fuel, tax, insurance etc to hire a horsebox when you need it. I doubt you`ll find a 4x4 for that budget, unless it needs the same again spending on it. sorry!

I have to disagree with that... Not all cheap cars are rubbish. Cars devalue quickly and the older ones with higher mileage are cheaper... As long as theyve been looked after. Plus i have a small car and its not that cheap. Im 19 im not going to have loads of money. But thankyou for your help and the links

I hope you are wrong :( I just paid £1200 for a N reg disco 2.5 2 weeks ago !!

144k on the clock land rover service history to 130k, it's had replacement boot pan and arches and the rest of it is in fab nick - ES model full leather etc ! Ok it needed new tyres all round which I had done today for £330 and there is a fault on the ABS sensor that needs fixing but I got that checked before I bought it and will only be about £80. I am also really pleased with the fuel economy as I did about 370 miles on £50 of diesel. I used to have a little old 1.8 petrol golf auto and it guzzled its way through my ££££

Keep your eye on ebay - for us it was between the Trooper and the disco. I am really really happy with it

Not everyone has lots of money.. simple as.

My horses are still well cared for and id still like to compete so I need transport.. Therefore a cheapish 4x4 and trailer are the only way forward for me :/
