I currently have a Nissan Xtrail 2.2 dci sport and I've had it for just over a year.

In that year I have had 3 bumps, had to replace both front and rear break pads and now it needs a new clutch and dual fly wheel at an estimated cost of £800 and even after that there is a chance that the dfw may go again in the future.

I'm now basically thinking that rather than pay to fix the clutch I'll just get ride of it and exchange it for another car - either trade it in or sell it to that "we buy any car lot" - they've quoted me just over £7k for it which is just short of what I paid for it.

So what do I get instead - I want an older model to avoid the high road tax and something more sturdy and reliable than the xtrail. My friend is selling her Mitsubishi SWB 3.2 shogun and I'd get it for just over £3k - its a 2001 model so tax is only £180 per year but I worry about fuel consumption although I'd be able to drive it for a week to see how much mileage I get out of it - I do about 120 miles per week.

I've also spotted some other slightly newer Shoguns with 2.5 engine which will be more economical but higher in tax or there is a Kia Sorento for just over £7k which is an option.

Does anyone have a 3.2 Shogun - how do you find it on diesel? I never found the xtrail that economical and felt like I was constantly at the petrol station so would welcome any thoughts!
 
I had a 2.8TD shogun and loved it but mine was a gas guzzler - think it was to do with the offroad tyres I had on it but I only got about 18 miles to the gallon !

i am also looking.........currently have a swb mits pajero - its brilliant but a bit too old ( 1994) so i am looking at the jeep grand cherokee, just can not decide LPG or 2.7 diesel!!!!!!
i have been advised the newer shoguns are not so good.......mpg is poor and not great pulling power on the swb models.
only looking as i travel 100miles a day to work and back....
 
I have a jeep which is a real warhorse - has to tow and also be the car to take me to work some 40miles each way. I am having to sell it (car policy) in the new year to get a younger version but am really happy with it - my mechanic said these were highly reliable cars as this is nothing "fancy" on them. In 4 years its just been normal servicing, tyres etc and it now has 90K on the clock...next car is going to be a jeep too!!
 
Dont touch the shogun sport its basicly the old model L200 pick up with a estate body, very thirsty and not good the 3.2 shogun is a much better car and will be ok on fuel, work on high twenties and low 20s for the shogun sport, however if the big shogun is manual has a pesky and expensive dualmass flywheel so a new clutch is expensive, £3000 k seems a bargain if its tidy and not to far the wrong side of 100,000 miles, and is much much better for towing

I've got a Nissan terrano SWB, it's an 05 so misses the change in tax and stays at the lower tax band . It tows great, has cost me nothing in repairs ( I really do off road as it gets used for checking sheep!) I get around 430 miles to a tank costing around £65 to fill from empty - fuel light in a panic type empty!
 
Nissan Terrano, 2.7 Diesel, mine does really well fuel wise and tows great, new clutch cost me £312.00 in vat and fitting with 2 year 20,000mile warranty from Mr Clutch you want the Pre digital speedo unless it's allready been replaced.
 
Iv got a nissan navara 56 plate and I love it! My tax is £125 a year,I think coz it's classed as commercial so when u purchase u have to pay vat on top but not too bad on fuel considering iv got the aventura model. Great to drive and best bit is that the back's totally separate to the front so I can put my 2 smelly dogs in and you can't smell them! Also I can fit loads in back as so much room.
