4x4 Tow vehicles (again)

HI all

Looking tentatively at a grunty 4x4 to have as spare care to tow a trailer - so I wont' have to drive it all the time.

So - looking in the £1000 range in which case:

THere's a Mitzubishi Pajero Auto locally, owned by some people who've had it to tow *their* trailer

and

an Isuzu Trouper with a lower mileage

If both are in equal condition with good tax/MOT, any thoughts on which of these is

a) more reliable
b) easier to drive
c) best to tow with
d) anything else?

Hi wouldn't have the pajero. They just don't seem to have what it takes. Would go for the trooper. Although I suppose it also depends on the weight that you are towing.

I have towed loads in the past and would only consider. Land rover Defender , county. and the Discovery 3 not the new one. I have now got a Diahatsu fourtrack 2.8 turbo and love it it has towed a big trailer with a 19hh shire cross and a 17hh. With no problem at all . I have had it for 8 years It is P reg and i would not part with it for the world . They are quite cheap to pick up on the internet and go forever.

need to tow one 14hh 400Kg pony and a trailer light enough that we can tow it to fairs and the like with my partner's car to take carded wool and fleece and the like - so looking at a Bateson Deauville or similar

So the Pajero would probably do the job, but may still not be a particularly good car

My pajero was fine with my ifor 505 and my 450 kg arab, started to feel it a bit more when we added a 700-odd kg IDx! but think most would! Not saying it couldn't cope, but could feel the weight down hills etc. Is the one you are looking at a 2.8 or 2.5? SWB or LWB? Mine is the 2.8 SWB, think LWB would probably be better.
It is a nice car - we use it as an everyday car as well - but has been a little unreliable in the past. Been ok recently though to be fair. it is so easy to tow with an auto, but long term probably not that good for the car!

I have heard good things bout both of those 4x4s....

I personally bought a Jeep Cherokee with my £1000 budget, drives well, pulls 505 and two horses brilliantly and it meant I could get something a bit newer for my money....

I had a Shogun and i loved it! It would pull quite a bit although i only had a 14.2hh to tow.Before i had it it was used on a farm to tow very heavy trailers for the crops.It was a great everyday car as it was comfy and wasn't a really old model but not brand new either! I sold it as i was doing a lot of miles every day, have now changed to a run around car and 3.5 T lorry,if i could afford it i would of kept it as it was so useful to have,it was quite smart too and wasn't shameful to be seen in! I miss it loads ( i know sad) but i thought even the diesels were juicy,was going through £20 a day in fuel! My OH used to tow my horse in a Daihatsu and it was fab,would def have one of those again.We once took 2 MW 16HH horses in a muddy hunt field and it was the only car and trailer to get through,was very impressed,the only thing i'd say-it wasn't a practical every day car as quite uncomfy,be useful for weekend comps though.Not built for luxury definatley a work machine! But hey thats what their for.

I've just had a 2.8td SWB pajero automatic to tow with but i've only gone out with an empty trailer once so far as I'm on L plates learning! The 2.8 is well rated and has more pulling power than the 2.5.
I absolutely LOVE driving 'the beast' as I call it

I love it but it's bl00dy heavy on diesel and I'm thinking i might have to start cycling everywhere that I can!

But it does do many Smiles to the gallon!

Another Daihatsu fan here, wouldn't be without ours (our second). It tows like a dream, sometimes too well cos you forget trailer (505) is there!

i have a 2.8td LWB pajero . tows my 510 ifor really well. they are built like a tank. i did lots of research and they are deffo one of the best

Just at the moment, I'll consider anything at all, including turning the pony away to stud if I don't find a saddle to fit her soon...
