hi there need some help on the economics of running round in a small car and buying a 3.5 ton box or run my fourtrak which is nice to tow with but not very cheap to use as a runaround ie school runs, ferrying kids around etc him indoors coming round to idea of box and small car but as ever wants the financial figures so help much needed

I had a fourtrak and trailer and had to sell them to buy a 7.5 tonne when we got the big dressage horses and they wouldn't go into the trailer, so appreciate where you are coming from - I loved my 4x4, I hate my focus!!

Whilst a 3.5 tonne would probably be cheaper to run than my lorry, IMO the foutrak and trailer would still be the cheaper option, when you think about the extra tax, insurance, breakdown etc.

But, on the other hand, after having a lorry, I just couldn't go back to a trailer - it's so much easier with the lorry.

If OH is coming round to the idea, grab it with both hands!!

i have both, my lorry is currently gathering moss i so prefer the cost of traveling with trailer and Landy

We sold our shogun and trailer and got a 7.5 ton box and we love it! the shogun was so expensive on fuel etc , we just got a small car each and the lorry sits up at the yard , dont think I would go back to a trailer now, tell him indoors that he will look dead manly driving a lorry!! it worked for me!

I have a Corsa that I need, hubby uses 4x4 for work (tows a trailer) so the idea of a box seems a bit daft really BUT hubbys finally come round to me having a box after seeing me bashed and bruised during one of our trailer practices.
After having the use of a box Im so excited to maybe owning my own. I'll have to worry about the upkeep after

weve gone from a very very smart gas guzzleing 4x4 and trailer, to an aincient only slightly less gass guzzleing lorry. however i wouldnt go back to the trailer.
Ours cost £165 a year to tax, however if you are like some people and dont compete for part of the year then you can put it on SORN and reduce that.
My lorry costs £300 to insure for any driver over 25 and myself a learner HGV driver including breakdown and recovery.
It does more MPG then the 4x4 we had so feul costs for shows have gone down, and every day feul costs have gone down because we are running a smaller car
