Ok. I'm really proud of my little peugeot 206 quicksilver getting me safely to and from the yard today . I was a little jelous of the range rovers whizzing around unaffected but also hear reports about 4x4's skidding and getting stuck anyway! How are all your cars coping and do we really need 4x4's?

4x4s skid on ice just the same as other cars (perhaps why so many have accidents because the drivers think they are ice proof when they are not) but they come into their own in deep snow (or mud) where normal cars can just lose the grip and go nowhere. I think a lot of it is the skill of the driver in a normal car, I always used to get out and about in my little cars but my current big people carrier is an automatic and I really struggle with it, Im not sure whether it is the size or the gearbox that causes me problems!

My little Ka is doing amazingly well in this weather, carrying me, dog and hay over frozen tractor tyre ruts and up and down hills. Did get a bit stuck this a.m. tho'. Have to keep my hay at home & its down a steep bit. Loaded up but couldn't get up the slope. Managed to turn round and come back through a field. I love my car!

I couldn't be without our 4x4. It is a true godsend! There's no way I'd be able to make it up the yard in any other car!

Snap!

as someone else said, cars are only as good as the driver. Having said that my horses are down a bridleway on the top of the North Downs, I have three ways of getting to the yard and all of them include a bloody big hill!
I have an Isuzu Rodeo and whilst it's nice having the 4wd option, the fact that it's a low revving diesel means that in 2wd (rear wheel) it's been fine!

I love my 4x4. I agree with hch4971. They are big heavy cars (Disco) and skid just the same as any other car but mine has a 'snow mode'. Stick it in snow mode and you sail through drifts. It was a difficult journey today, mainly caused by people who really don't have a clue how to drive in the snow, however I made it and the ponies were very pleased to see me! :) :)

its all about grip and the tyres!! yes 4x4 will help but op gives a clue the isuzu most likely has mud and snow tyres so even in 2wd still goes ok a 4x4 with crappy road tyres wont go as well as a normal car with M&S will in slippy conditions snow or mud :D however the 4X4 would be better in deep ruts or snow because of its better ground clearance once your bellied out its stuck and time to get towed out!!! and yes a 4X4 can be worse once it starts sliding.. be carefull out there folks...

Nope! Lol ordinary road tyres as only had it 5 days and not had time to put any on!
Oh mind a basic van tyre can be fairly chunky, thats what happens some people put all terain tyres on when the origional bridgstone m&s wear out and others just go down the local tyre place and end up with the cheapest van tyres but if its ok dont worry untill you wear them out....

we have had grippy tyres puy on isuzu crewcab normal tyres on xtrail but only 4 wheel drive when push button landy 4 wheel drive all the time whether wante or not.

VW Polo, he's fighting his way through all sorts of snow. 4x4's are great in this weather, but I can't justify the cost of keeping one for most of the year.

Yeah I agree with tiny pony..... Was having this discussion with OH last year I said I wanted a 4x4 last year and he said u can't justify getting 1 for the once every 5 years it snows  well we've had snow about 5 times a year for the last 2 years ! Forgive me are mud and snow tyres also known as 'winter tyres' meaning u can only literally use in snow/ mud or they wear out instantly .

No M&S are all season tyres with normal compound its just the tread is more chunky... Winter tyres are made of very soft rubber compound and yes they dont last long on dry warm roads, say about half as long... but if we are going to have these cold snowy winters I think we will have laws about having to use them like the contenentals do as its pathetic the whole country grinds to a halt the moment there is a inch or so of snow...
