:( i was almost tempted :( poor little bugger :( dont think i have time for another i think its so sad that he is worth that little that they would swap for hay, poor little baby shouldnt even be weaned yet :(

I don't think ponies are going even for that much at the sales and realistically, I'm glad they're selling rather than keeping him on, unable to feed him. Also, and I'm rather pragmatic about this sort of thing, I don't see a problem with a swap for hay. They need the money to buy hay anyway and might get a better deal this way.
Yes, he's young, but I've had to wean both of mine off PF at 5 months because despite my very best efforts, she was getting far too thin.

I'm with PF on this, and like her I have weaned at 5 months for the good of the mare.

My way of thinking is that if they want/have to sell they will, they are just widening their options a bit.
After all, the 170 will probably just be spent on hay anyway to feed whatever they do have.
How much is hay in the UK anyway?

I barter all the time, I have no issue with it.
I often swap covering fees for hay, Zeus earned 45 round bales of good first cut this season.

It does sound sad when that is about 40 bales of hay for a life (it would be a bargain to my mind), but practical.

Saying that, from what I have been reading lately, at some sales you can BUY a pony for less than the price of ONE bale of hay :( Now that really is sad.

I am with PF.
I am looking daily at prices and it is quite astonishing, People are dropping their prices all the time it seems, oh how I wish Durham was not so far away as there are a few horses I really like up that way for peanuts really. I reckon auctions will be very low as PF says.

We purchased our first three horses back in 1991 by swapping our car for them!
We also sold one of our young stock many years ago and the chap asked to pay us in hay, we accepted...
