5 point breastplate?

i did a search but i think this is specific to my horse + i need shopping help!

My horse is quite spooky and tbh a bit of a plank. shes babyish so its acceptable so i want to ride her through it, however i want to do it by not hanging onto her mouth!

I want something to secure my saddle (im paranoid about it slipping), and also if needed something to hold onto, especially during tantrums :D would a 5 point breastplate be ok?

she wears a dressage saddle (we dont have aGP)... i dont want to look like amuppet....but if its does the job.....

any reccomendations welcome - also links! (cheap as poss - im horseowning on a budget!)

The five-point BP's are lovely but they are pricey (even the cheaper ones that I've seen). I would have thought that a standard three-point hunting BP would do everything you want and would be cheaper to buy. :)
 
I would think that a 5 point might be a bit of a pain with a dressage saddle. I would recommend a good old fashioned D ring attachable b/plate as per faracat (never go anywhere without one personally) and also a neck strap for extra hang-on-ability. (My x-times completed badminton trainer won't ever sit on any horse without a plain neck strap on it!). :D

faracat - i looked at the OT 5 point - £60... i dont want to spend that as im a tight arse - so yeah your right there they are expensive :D

i do really like the 5 point though and the concept.... espcieally with a youngster... shes always had one on apparantly - i have ridden without but,,,,!

Try ebay? Someone might be selling a used one. You could put a Wanted listing on ebay.
 
I would be careful of cheaper ebay "own brand" items as they often don't have the quality of leather or stitching that they ought to and there is nothing more disappointing (from bitter experience) as spending the money on your ebay bargain only to find you have to spend even more again on something better quality!!

Yup. A good second-hand one is much better than a lot of new ones. Just check the stitching carefully :)

Looks good, the best price I've seen for one. :) It looks quite adjustable but it's a shame that none of the photos show the whole thing. I'd be tempted to get one for my mare but they only have it in large and Little-miss-tiny-shoulders will probably need a medium. :(

it looks like it will fit a dressage saddle as they have put the 'extra' straps under the saddle flaps (possibly attached to the girth straps, rather than to the girth itself) and not below them. You will definately need to do that to fit it to a dressage saddle. :)
 
Try Evision for a cheap but decent breastplate (nice leather too).

HOWEVER I found they really don't fit well on broad horses with big shoulder - they seem to be disigned for narrow TBs and I just couldn't get it to sit right on my welsh cob x (even though he's not massively wide).

I use a normal hunter breastplate for the same reasons as you and found it more stable and secure as a 'grab' strap than the 5point too: I found the wither strap on the 5point twisted and moved easily.

i normally buy the first i see :o but this is horse owning on a budget so im being very careful!... would rather spend a bit more now than get one that is rubbish and breaks and have to buy a new one anyhow! :)

not read all replies i thought i needed one because my brand new saddle was slipping only bought saddle fitted four months to be told by another it dosnt fit and was cause of horses bad back and tilting me forward :mad:
