2 hairy bears out with no clothes on - one irish cob and one ISH/ PBA
One wee welshie in with no rug, lovely and toasty
One TB who is a year old this month was cold this morning with just a l/w stable rug on so has a real wool old fashioned sheet on under her l/w rug tonight so hopefully she wont be as chilly as she was this morning bless her - is already -10 here :(
 
My namby pamby WB who loses weight at the drop of a hat is in a 300g with hoodie and a 340g Masta overnight stabled.

Outside he's in 300g under plus 340g t/o as he feels the cool and throws a rather weedy sparce goatie hairs bless him if he's not warm enough. :rolleyes:

fully clipped tb who lives out 24/7 is 400g turnout with neck and snuggy hood
fat connie who also lives out 24/7 is in 200g turnout with neck
 
Little man & big man are both in their fleeces with their stable rugs on top... toasty warm!! Not fully clipped this year so they don't need their duvets... though they look cute in them!
 
There was another thread on here not long ago asking "are horse owners getting softer?". I think we are soft in the main with our horses, me included.
In the US, they debate about whether to "blanket" or not when it's far below freezing, sometimes -20 or 30! I think they tend not to clip at the drop of a hat or because that's what you do come autumn but even a fully clipped horse in our winter is probably going to be warmer than a horse in the US in -20 degrees:eek:
I read an article about how horses cope with freezing temperatures and it said provided they have plenty of forage to eat, the fermentation in their stomachs acts like central heating.
I wonder how horses in places like Russia or North America, or wild horses with no one to rug them up and no hay thrown out for them, survive?
I think it all depends on the individual horse, the shelter or lack of it, and how much they have to eat as to whether they would thrive or shiver,but generally I think it is better to under rug and give plenty of hay to keep their tummies full.
I do worry about the number of overweight animals and the increase in laminitis, and other ailments due to our pampering them too much.

Mine is in a 450g, and has been for ages. He's happy, and gets it off every so often for a few hours so he can have a roll and just get a break from wearing it.
 
3 of mine are fully clipped incl legs

the big chap has a fal HW on plus a MW underneath

K has a 100g liner plus M/L and then a MW on top (as she managed to rip 2 of her other rugs!!!)

B is a total wimp and has a 250g liner, 100g rug and 200g rug on.

they old git is quite hairy and has a 200g liner and 100g ontop.

layering makes a huge difference to keeping them warm....and if they ripped a rug, they still have another waterproof one underneath.....

also they cant have full necks on as they now know they can shove through the (mains) electric fence if they have them on.......
