Hi all,

I finally placed a deposit today on a stunning dapple grey RID and i am a very happy girl!!

I have only one dilemma....

He passed a 5* vetting in january so i dont know whether to get him vetted again or if i am just wasting my money as it was only 4 months ago??!!!

What would you do ???

A lot can happen in 4 months! Get him vetted by a vet of your choice, not the choice of the vendor.Your own vet can recommend a vet if the horse is out of area.

How come he was vetted 4 months ago?
Congrats on finding him and fingers crossed all goes well

I would, just for peace of mind. I would actually also get it done by the vendors vet as the vet is legally obliged to tell you if the animal has been seen by the practice before and why. Will make sure you have all the facts :)

He was vetted in January as thats when the lady bought him but she has been diagnosed with a serious illness and can no longer give him the time or work he needs as he is only just 6! :-(

I would get him re-vetted as you never know whether she is really telling the truth. There are some good liars out there! And anything could have happened since, like everyone else is saying!

hope it is all as it seems though :)

Yes definitely if the January one was done by the current owner. She may have discovered something she doesn't want you to pick up in a vetting. Sure that's not the case but best get it done, a lot can happen in four months.

In Jan my horse was out getting 65% in Novice dressage and I'd printed out the membership forms to register her BD - today she's 3 weeks into a year off due to injury through no fault of mine or hers - for the sake of a couple of hundred pounds it's worth it :)

Id get it redone Im afraid. Id hate to think the lady is lying about her illness, which I very much doubt she is, but in reality she could tell you anything if she had discovered a problem she didnt want you to find out about.
Ive been bitten before so tend to be a bit over cautious.

Thankyou everyone, i know i will def get one done. I have found a vets near where the horse is for sale that do a 5 stage for just over £200 which i thought was great so am going to get it booked in on monday.

feel alot better now i have decided :-)

If I remember rightly, insurance companies won't accept a vetting certificate that is more than a couple of weeks old or in a name other than the purchaser.

It may be worth asking if they would accept the bloods and x'rays if they were done/taken, but unless the horse is dirt cheap and/or you are not insuring him, it's a full 5 star again with bloods and if I was buying him and paying a decent price I would xray fronts on a big draught.

You are right to get another vetting done.

The seller has told you she had the horse vetted 4 months ago & she's the one that's selling him............ she may be genuine but she may be selling as there is a problem? Additionally a vetting is like a car MOT, it's only valid on the day of the test.

Check which vet the seller uses & ensure that you don't have the smae one do your vetting ;)

Spending an extra £200 on a vetting is the right way to go as it should put your mind at rest regarding how healthy & fit for purpose the horse is. You will also sleep better having it done. :)

Definantely get him 5* vetted, you should read thread 'help I have been conned'. That would make your mind up for you, there are obviously some dodgy vendors out there.

Think you've definitely made the right decision to get him vetted, as all the others have said - so much can happen in that small amount of time! You can always tell the current owner that its for insurance purposes, as they will only accept a very recent vetting certificate.

I'm still not sure why people are so against using the vendors vet... It's one thing I always do as they have a duty to disclose any visits, treatment etc the horse may have had.

In today's culture do you honestly think that a reputable vet would risk their reputation and licence just to get one through a vetting

I'm afraid I've only recently heard of things going horribly wrong with a sale where the buyer used the vendor's vet. I wouldn't use any vet other than my own under any circumstances now, no matter what it cost me. However I also ask sellers if they are willing to allow their vets to talk to me about the horse's previous history with them. I've done this twice now without any problems at all. In a private sale where the seller's had the horse for some time I think it's well worth asking. If they refuse it would make me think there was a problem.

Thankyou so much for your replys!!!
5 stage vetting is booked for friday at 2.30pm and if all goes well i pick up my new boy on saturday.

keep your fingers crossed for me!!!!!

Good desision to get the vetting I had a horse vetted four months after it had had one I almost did not as he was a very clean looking horse thank god I did he had had a virus it damaged his heart and he could have gone down while ridden.
No one knew he had had a virus we where told he did not necessary show symptoms it was a good lesson learned.

Grey RID lovely :) - well I would say that wouldn't I, because that's what my girl is.

Think you're doing right thing having him vetted - fingers crossed all OK and look forward to seeing photos when he arrives home
