5 YO Going through wont shant phase

I think I am being tried out now. We have been through I wont go in the school followed a couple of days later by I wont turn right and now I have you are NOT putting that Bridle on THIS horse (we did of course I undid the bit put the Bridle over his ears and slipped it in sideways.

Do you think this is a 5 YO trying his mum out ??

I have managed to get round them all without a fight.
 
Yes - i went through exactly the same phase with my mare - although she waited until she was 6 to do this. It was just little things like she would charge out of the school on the way back to the yard and started spooking more out hacking.

You just have to persuad them it really is easier to do as you ask without getting too sharp with them.
 
Always best to find a way around the fighting, just keep going!
If it helps people say that the 5th year is always the worst. Maybe this is the case with your horse?

Yes. My mare started her funny phase at the end of her 4th year and thinks of a new thing to try every month of this, her 5th year.

I am doing the same as you though, just ignore their sillyness and keep plodding one.
 
Yes.... my first horse went thought a I can't let you brush my legs phase, so I called spoke to the head lass at the yard and he'd never done it before, so she told me to hold a whip in one hand and every time he moved give him a tap... it worked in 10 mins... he never moved a muscle again when I brushed his legs, he was also 5!!
They are amazingly crafty little so and so's!!

Oh tell me about it........Ive had not loading, planting, rearing, refusing to jump (1ft cross pole terrifying - 3ft spread fun - work that one out???

) twig is 5 and a half now and only the past couple of weeks or so she has morphed into a lovely girl (interspersed with now rarer moments of 'make me' ) It might seem really tough but just keep going. My 'rearing loonatic ex racehorse' as she was is thought of by some went and won both her dressage tests at the weekend with 70% and this is only her fourth time out

trust me......you'll feel very smug when it all starts coming together!
 
I urge you to get thesaddle checked. I've experienced this sort of thing and it was found to be that the saddle, although aparentl fitting well was in fact slightly narrow. a wider saddle instantly sorted the problem making the horse more comfortable. the horse could also be going through a teething phase and have some pain , albeit slight, in the mouth. a couple of weeks off might sort this if this is what the problem is,meanwhile i'd get her saddle and back and teeth checked out.

Taking your points in order you are quite correct :-

Saddler is booked I have had to wait 3 weeks seeing him 1pm tomorrow as he knows my current saddle was advised thick numnah and gel pad.

Teeth have been checked and rasped its one of the first things I arranged.

Had his back checked and all is well no problems with current way of using saddle.
I spent a lot of time holding his head and touching his face today and then put two headcollars on. Undid the first and he threw his head up saying no and then realised he still had one on popped the bridle on with hardly any fuss and gave him polos as a reward.
