Did anyone watch it last night on BBC 3?

50 different monumental/total failure moments from the past Olympics, the only equestrian one they showed was pentathletes riding terribly and horses falling over

I know its a hard sport to grasp for the non-horsey but even a non-horsey person can see the beauty of a well executed dressage test or sense the thrill of a cross country round.

Talk is of how 'horsey' these London Olympics are, so why show nasty falls and horses flipping over?

I don't have a clue about many sports but still felt appreciation for the clear talent on display!

Oh yes the one where the horse literally fired the bloke over a oxer was pretty funny lol. But it could of been balanced, we've done pretty well really and the 2008 eventing team bronze was awesome can't find any good vids atm!!!

I like yours, beautifully ridden :)

I only watched the end, but was once again struggling to hold back the tears when the guy did his hamstring and limped to the finish with his dad. I was disappointed that they showed so little of Steve Redgraves 5 golds, his last win was so incredible. I watched it live at gone midnight on the big screen after the pub I worked in closed and there was not a dry eye in the place.

I did notice the reference to the "Horse Pentathlon" at the end though

I would have thought that Leslie Law's medal, where he accepted it after returning home whilst at a relatively small show with a young horse was remarkable enough to get a mention......

I didnt see the programme, however i have to disagree with this ^^ i dont think non-horsey people do see the beauty of dressage, i think most see it as boring and I'm sure I've seen it top polls for 'the most pointless olympic sport' in the past, and that is why equestrian sports dont get the kind of coverage as other sports. Seeing people fall off/horses trip/fall very sadly makes good TV.

Oh no I wouldn't expect them to sit through a 5 min freestyle but maybe a clip of some pirouettes or abit of piaffe surely...?

Although I completely agree with you, hears hoping for some golds to show people something us brits can do! I think our riders this year should be giving other countries a run for their money.....

There aren't too many "good stories" from dressage though are there? Maybe if we get a record breaking score or something then it would be included in future. Something like Charlotte's recent 90%+ score would definitely qualify just like they mentioned the first perfect 10 in the gymnastics. I think there is lots of potential for the kind of stories that were mentioned in the programme to happen in equestrian but can't think of too many that have happened in the past.

I disagree, to most non horsey people a well executed dressage test is no different to a badly ridden one and there isn't the same 'thrill' to a horse trotting around for 6 minutes as the thrill of a 100m sprint race.

But I was referring to the thrill of watching the XC....

I watched it and said to OH that it was irritating that the only equestrian stuff they showed was crap riding/falls

I was disappointed that Steve Redgrave wasn't at number one actually. I know Muhammed Ali was amazing for managing to do what he did but still, it's Olympic year, if ever we're allowed to be obviously partisan it's now ;)

Ha thank you :p

Yes Ali was amazing though got a proper lump in my throat, I do hope that Steve Redgrave gets to light the flame!!!!

I have to say though, as "moments" go watching Ali with the flame was certainly awe inspiring. I cried when I watched it happening and I cried when I watched it last night! When he was on Sports Personality a few years ago getting the lifetime achievement award he still had that wonderful sparkle in his eyes.

I have to admit to a few watery eyed moments last night, there were some simply wonderful memories in there, from Steve Redgrave, wonderful man that he is, true competitor and clearly made from proper tough stuff, to the wonderful smile of Daley Thompson, always in awe of the decathletes/heptathletes, they are almost world class in a whole range of sports. Greg Louganis and his superb diving after smashing his head on the board, another true competitor and totally gorgeous too! Every time I see Kelly Holmes win her double gold I blub, I was a long time fan of hers and had to see her disappointment at so many comps over the years as she suffered so many injuries! Did anyone see the wonderful Chris Boardman moment when he got his Gold?

Have to admit to some chuckles at the Greco-roman wrestling, fair play to the american guy who won gold whilst suffering with a broken neck!

Did they include the marathon from last time (or might have been the time before) where the winner didn't realise he'd finnished and kept running?

Haaha the wrestles were erm.. wrong, i popped to loo and came back to two men in a very comprising position, lol thought the dog had changed the channel :o It was informative and I felt like I learnt loads!

yes!! :)

Most non-horsey people I know think dressage is easy and riding basically consists of sitting there and the horse does all the work. They have no idea of the work involved to produce a horse to that standard and the fact that each movement has very specific guidelines as to the perfect execution. Knowing that makes you appreciate the sport more but I suppose being non-horsey doesn't mean you won't enjoy watching it!

It was the 'greatest' moments (i thought it was that at first). It was something like 'amazing' moments and quite a lot of them were sport fails and controversial moments, like the idiot that stopped the marathon runner and corrupt boxing judges declaring the blatent loser and winner. I think they're point with the pentathlon was the fact a lot of the riders were so shocking and it was at an olympic competition.

Would've been good if they could've done one for Leslie Law winning the gold.
