Sat on my youngster for the first time today properly :) have been long reining her and doing alot of inhand work for a while now. Got on her today fully tacked up (with my helper) and sat on her and walked round the menage a few times. Didn't bat an eye lid :) she did at one point turn her head and tried to chew my boot!
Shes 3, cobby and wide and measures between 14.1 - 14.2 hoping she will fill out more and make 15hh. I am 5ft10 and weigh 10st i am very balanced and so i know am not heavy for her just tall!! looked back at few pics today and am worried i look tall on her :( the fact that i didnt have stirrups didnt help matters as my legs are very long!!
Suppose she has got more growing to do but she is looking quite levelled out and mature  heres hoping this summer she will bloom!
My other mare is 16.2hh so maybe its because am not used to being low down!
I also have a yearling welsh D (very chunky boy mind) who should make 15hh so i guess i may have to get used to the idea of a smaller horse or cut my legs down!

So i know this has been done before but who else is 5'10 or over and rides something 15.1 and under?? pics would be good and i may post mine!
:D

i wouldnt worry about how tall you are at all! im 5 ft 8 and 10st and my pony is 13.2 fell pony ( so quite stocky) . compete with him and every thing and no one says anything. id say weight i would be more of an issue that height but your only 10st and if its a stocky horse then they probably dony know your even on their back.

Thank you have made me feel better! she is cobby and am thinking she will fill out more too :)

I have a complex too, I've had my boy since he was 6 months old he now 6, will be 7 in may Welsh Section D. Im just a shade under 6ft, weight 10 stone - hes 14.2/14.3hh. Carries my weight easily but my legs are ridiculously long.

Im more than happy on him, hes chunky now with a very deep girth & still filling out. Sure this summer will be developing a good thick neck & chest due to the extra work aswell.

I know I look slightly tall on him BUT I love him to bits & wouldnt have him any other way, no way will I stop riding him down to my legs looking a bit long (the comments off people that Im too big for him & I need something bigger upset me & wear thin sometimes) the only reason I would is if I was too heavy or causing him discomfort.

Stick me on a 16hh TBx & I look bigger on that than I do my boy because mine takes my leg up better, but people dont think that, they think tall person = big horse.

Have a look on my signature below, thats me on Addy going hunting last Feb. What do you think? lol You can look at it larger by clicking on it. I dont care what I look like, neither should you, if your happy, go for it! :oD xxx

I am 5'10 and my oh is 6 foot plus we both ride my haffy who is 14.3hh, oh weighs 13 stone, I weigh 19.6( please no comments about my weight) but I have very short legs so look alot smaller, I have to buy short chaps and even thay are long on me. I can say my oh does not look too big on my haffy.

OMG shes gorgeous, love her markings! Tell you what, my legs look worse than that with no stirrups lol thats nothing! Shes deep in the chest, chunkier than mine leg & neck wise, you dont look big on her at all! Sue you'd look better than I do when you have stirrups lol. She'll carry your weight easy & will develop muscle etc with work like your doing now.

I did the same as you when I was breaking in my boy really & at the same age (3 years) I did a sit on session & long reining - it did wonders - I went for miles following friends hacking lol & as a result hes bombproof, also usd to lead him out in hand. People thought I was nuts!

What I did slowly & to mix it up a bit so he didnt get bored, as he got fitter etc was to loose school & even over the odd pole just to make him think, also started literally 10 min lunging sessions just so he got the idea & to learn voice commands (only in a headcollar at first). As you probably know they tire very quickly mentally not physically at that age, even 15/20 mins at first actually on Addy & he couldnt concentrate anymore. My first half an hour lesson consisted of several breaks & he was nearly 5 at that point lol more to do with him being mentally shattered. Short, sweet & mix it up are my top tips! lol Believe me its the most rewarding thing Ive ever done!

It is so rewarding isn't it? i haven't stopped smiling all day :) had her since she was 10 months old, seems like i have had her alot longer!
Have a little welshy colt too, really can't wait to start him, i can tell he is going to be a challenge, a cheeky boy! got a few more years to wait though yet.
Planning on inhand classes this summer with the pair of them :) get them out a bit - something for them to think about!

Took me ages to realise I actually could just go for a hack with the rest lol so used to watching everyone going off & Im left grooming my pet which went on for 3 years. Aww welshies are my soft spot, Ads very cheeky & smarter than he makes out learning quick - best trick being heaving & puffing as if hes going to die after 1 or 2 laps of the school, once he realises Im on to him he stops but takes a while, think he knows he will get ridden until he sweats as thats the only reliable sign otherwise at the mo lmao. Never got to try in hand but took him to shows as a companion, great practice for him, more interested in grazing than anything else, the odd squeal to distract his mate from the class but that was it! Good luck with them both!

5'10" on 15.1 (just, with his shoes on) - oh and 14 stone:o. I went through a phase when I thought I was going to be too big for him then he sprouted - out the way as much as anything. I've had him since he was a foal and always hoped he would be bigger but now he feels just right:D

Lovely boy! :)

I think it maybe in my head that i look to big on my youngster.........everyone looks fine on there under 15.1hh - my girl should fill out to 15.1hh (or do her passport says

I'm 5'10/11''

This little ex racehorse was 15hh on her tiptoes, on a bright day, with shoes on etc!
I'm aware I am too big on her, (aesthetically, not physically) I don't think it makes a very nice picture - she is now with a 14yo girl who is about 5 foot on her tiptoes and makes the mare look massive!!

Hi, I'm 5'10" and own a 14.3 Haffy and a 15hh cob type. Here is me on the Haffy:

Not a great pic but all I have on photobucket at the moment I'm afraid...

5'9, and used to ride a 14.2 regularly... sorry, I deleted all the pics of me on board as my sister took them on a freezing day and the combo of many layers, icy wind, sleet and her choosing all the wrong moments to hit the shutter resulted in some very unflattering shots:eek: But I didn't feel too big on him in the slightest. I don't think you look too big on yours OP - people seem to be conditioned to want massive big horses I think, when actually they don't necessarily always need them. I was told on here I should be looking for something of 17hh+ - I mean, come on!

I am 5ft10 weight between 12 and13st and have long legs ,

i ride a very slight 16hh WB mare, my legs do look long on her, in fact when in dressage saddle come right past her belly sometimes, but she carries my fine so I dont care,

Think William FP on his horses, you will be fine on it, esp if its cobby.

Follow link and you will see some photos, there in to my FB album which is open for anyone to view

I'm 6ft & my boy is just short of 15hh, dont see the problem with it & if people did see it as a problem I would tell them where to shove it :D

I'm 5'8" with a 13.2hh Fell pony too! I just weigh a bit more than 10 stone. I've backed my lad and no problems (well, none related to my height or weight!). Not got many pictures of me riding him, needless to say I probably do look a bit tall in the body but not ridiculous, his considerable bulk takes up the leg! :D

As above. This fixation with rider height and horse height never ceases to amaze me! The mare I'm riding in my profile album is 14.3hh and I am over 6ft. No worries.

Agree with this! I am five foot six and 10.5 stone and I ride my daughters very chunky exmoor cross who stand at a mere 12.2 hands. She might be wee but she's built like a tank and is happy to gallop around with me on her back. The funniest comment I ever got though was from a white van man who yelled, "Oi love, your horse has shrunk!". She's a lot of fun to ride and I wouldn't swap her for the world, nor would the kids. I would like it if she was just a hand bigger though! :D

My 5'7" 9st friend has recently had to start riding her kids' 11.2 Sec A as he's put on so much weight over the winter (He's the only horse I've ever know to put on weight during snow despite not wearing a rug and having very meagre hay rations. He's now losing weight by coming in :confused:).

The kids are only 4 and 3 so are only toddling about on him and he's not going fast enough to burn any calories. He refuses to be lunged (just stands still staring at you) and her horse is terrified of littluns so she can't ride and lead so jumping on was the only option. She has to ride him bareback as his saddle's too small for her but she really doesn't look that bad on him!

yeap, me , too, I have always felt like that , that he was too small for me, but I got over it, and now it doesnt worry me at all, I just get on with it and enjoy it !!!

My biggest problem was finding a saddle that fitted both of us. I am long in the leg and he was short in the back when he was younger - and very very wide. It was very hard trying to find an 18" saddle that fitted him and let me fit my legs into without having my butt hanging out the back of it.

I ended up having to go treeless for a couple of years but he finally stretched out enough for us to get one sorted:D

Thanks for the nice comments btw:D

Oh i am so glad someone else has been worrying about this (in the nicest way) i'm 5ft4" and weigh just under 11st ( i need to lose weight) i've had my youngster for over a year now (he is will be 3 in May) and everyday i look at him and think...Hmmm will he be big enough. He is ID X New Forest and is now standing at approx 14.2hh (i don't think he has finished yet) but i see all the other liveries go off for hacks on these big 16hh horses and i'm so jealous.. I Love my Youngster to bits and woudln't swap him for the world as we have been through so much together already..People laugh at me and say oh he needs to stand on the muck heap then he will grow...funny..not.. I know ID's are slow growers so i'm hopinh he takes after his mum and keeps growing. But well done for being so patient too. i've been waiting all this time to start work on mine and this summer we will get going.. ;-)

Fany is 14-2hh and I am around 5-10, but very long legged, short bodied. Please excuse position, just cr*p we were having a rest as she had been a good girl, she hates schooling and had done well so were going round on the buckle.
