I'm 18 and still riding a 13.1 pony. it doesnt bother me too much because we have someone else riding him as well now so he still gets used but he's not being used to his full potential anymore as i've stopped riding him so much, would it look stupid if i was to start jumping him and perhaps competing him? he's a stocky 13.1 new forest an im only 8.5 stone so i know im not too heavy i'm just very tall, being 5ft 10, and having very long legs and you always have the added issue of people giving you funny looks and asking you 'Oh when are you getting a horse ?' can get a bit demoralising to be honest but the pony's needs should come before other peoples opinions shouldn't they? there are pictures of me an the pony recently on my page but what are your thoughts ?

im 5'10, weigh almost 2 stone more than you and i used to own a 13.2hh fell. i jumped and competed her too, the only thing you have to watch is keeping your stirrups shorter so you dont bash their knees or knock any jumps! You'll be fine :) i love riding littlies!

thanks :) I've had him 10 years so i've grown with him over the years so my balence is still fine with him just have no neck in front of me when he throws in a buck lol

depends on the pony I guess. I sold my 13.1hh because I felt too big on her - I am 5'4".

At 8.5 stone you would be fine. I am 5'7 but a couple of stone more, and my mare (a mini gypsy cob) is 13hh.

The no neck thing was one of my biggest concerns after having to sell my 15.3hh - it suddenly felt like I was riding a shetland with a funny triangle neck!

Blimey! You're fine! Do what you want to do and the pony will tell you in the (unlikely!!) event that he starts to find it hard.
Just ride him as you would any other horse and don't compromise your position by trying to make your legs shorter with stirrups. They can feel your calves, the heels don't need to make contact if the schooling is right.
You look great together.

Look, here's my good friend riding my little man, he carries her with ease. She's about the same height as you, but a string bean (like you) I think she weighs about 9st. He's about 14hh, but because he's more slender than your pony her legs come down further.

However, this is a winter photo when he's a bit roly poly, and you can see how much difference his belly makes to where her legs end up. (He did eat all the pies!).

My daughter is 5ft8 and around 9.5 stone, she still rides her 13.1 pony, he's been off for ages with laminitis and when he is fully recovered she prob won't do as much as she used to do with him but still hack and pop the odd jump. Here they are last summer having a bit of a whizz round some xc jumps.

We've been trying to get a little sharer for him but because of where he lives (no one about, no facilities) not many takers, other than total novices of whom he makes mince meat

There have been quite a lot of similar threads recently on a similar vein (but about weight not height).

I have the same issue - 5ft8 and riding a 12.2 (son's pony who he has lost confidence riding and have no one else to exercise her, lunging gets boring after a while:rolleyes:).

Have looked at your profile and I don't think you look too out of proportion at all. I have had sniggers from people I have hacked past but just ignore them.

You are well within weight limits so can't see an issue, just make sure you don't hook your feet on the top of jumps :D

I'm 5'8" and my pony is a 13.3hh (just) fell. A few people on my yard were looking at him the other day and they were really surprised when I got on him as it's a bit of an optical illusion, I look tall stood next to him but when I get on we look ok cos he takes up the leg so well.

I'm 5ft2 and this is me on my pony Horrid Herbie

He's only 12.2hh I look alittle tall but I don't think i'm to heavy for him. (He still manages to rear, buck, leap and spin with me on top ;) :p :D ) Lucy the pony in my siggy was only 13.2hh and we did everything together. Including endurance rides of upto and inclu 80km. :D

You don't look to big for your pony. As long as you are both happy thats all that matters. :D

I think that you look fine. So long as you are not to heavy for him (and you aren't) then I don't think there's a problem. I regularly ride a 14hh and I am 5' 10" and almost ten stone. I do look very long legged on him but who cares? So long as you are not too heavy.
