Hi all I currently have a 13.2hh pony cob decent bone I’m 5ft7/8 however my mom seems to think if I were to show her I would be marked down. I’m 14% of her weight and she carries me no problem but I’m quite tall. My mom also thinks that if somone who was shorter but over 15% of my ponies weight wouldn’t be marked down in a show. What are your thoughts? She mainly does show jumping no working hunter or anything thx x

What a weird (and rude) comment. Her mother is just expressing an opinion - it's not an offensive one, she isn't saying her daughter is too big/ heavy, just saying what she thinks would happen at a show.

OP, I think it depends a bit on how chunky the pony is and whether he takes up your leg or not. I am shorter than you (5'6") but I feel I would look too big on a pony that size and probably wouldn't try showing it. Whether you would get marked down or not I don't know, but it might affect the overall picture for the judge and bring your mark down.

It depends on the overall picture. You're not too heavy but if your legs hang down below his belly, or you have a long back so that you look unbalanced then the judge will notice.

I just don't see why it's really relevant and OP can't just go out and enjoy themselves tbh, or why their mum thinks their being marked down is such a travesty; the focus should be pony and rider having a good time really, shouldn't it!?

Is it wine o'clock or something? The OP's probably a junior, I doubt she needed to have her mother insulted as a new poster.

I think the comment has been removed so I can see what it said, she takes up my leg like they don’t dangle or anything, it’s more my top half, I’m fine weight wise (14% of the ponies weight) I think other people have said you wouldn’t get marked down for just show jumping but normal showing classes I would,, thank you ?

Only if the rider is so tall that she clouts the poles with her feet ?.

OP is not too heavy for her pony. As said, her height could be an issue for the bent idiocy that is ridden showing, but not for SJ.
That’s a funny thought ?? thanks for the giggle! So reading the comments I’m guessing stick to show jumping ?

For showjumping you need to clear the jumps, those are the only marks you get, or not. For showing, your mum could well be right. Are you wanting to show your pony or to enter a showjumping class?

prefarably show jumping, although not sure if doing it at a local riding club would affect judging or not, I’ve allways enjoyed dressage so this is abit new for me ?

For showing it partly goes on the overall ‘picture’ that the judge is looking at, this might be what your mum is getting at if you look tall on your pony
Yeah, my mum used to judge sand she said it, but then I spoke to a friend who also used to judge (more recently than my mum ?) and she said I look fine. I guess it’s all personal preference! I would like to show jump, seen your reply, wouldn’t discredit showing though,.,

The saddle is likely to be the biggest challenge :)
Suprisingly I fit quite well in her 15”, I’m getting her a new saddle soon as the 15” that she came with is too long imo, tried my friends 14” and seems a better fit on her and I still fit into it. That’s what you get for being a bean stalk ? my local tack shop couldn’t find a body protector that was right for me they was either too show but fit otherwise or the right length but too big body wise

Wow, yes, very lucky, but I wonder where on earth you put your legs in such tiny saddles :cool:
