hi im 21 and would love my own freedom to be able to compete my horse withought begging for lifts to shows...i have looked into taking my trailer test but realisticly i can not afford it and even if i pass it would never be able to afford a 4x4 (or to be able to run it) is it possible to get a 6.5 ton horsebox on finance as i can legally drive them and where from ?? thank you

If you are 21 you cannot legally drive a 6.5T, you can however drive a 3.5T

I would imagine it is possible to purchase on finance, however I suspect this would be on newer 12K + boxes and if you cannot afford a 4x4/trailer then I would query if it was a sensible decision to get finance on an expensive box.

The way I see it your two main options would either be to locally hire a 3.5T as and when needed, or purchase a cheap 3.5T (perhaps with a bank loan)

Echo you'll only be able to drive a 3.5t. It's not just the finance, which could be anything from £200 - £300+ a month, there's insurance, and if you're going out a lot, fuel will be a huge factor - but something i guess we all have to deal with!

As others have said, you will need to take a test to drive anything bigger than a 3.5 ton lorry, if you cannot afford that test I am not sure how you will afford to borrow money to buy a lorry ? As for where you get the finance, the best place to look is the bank or building society that you bank with - or where you salary is paid into. They are more likely to lend you money as you will have some history with them.

Why dont you save up for an older 3.5t?

I've had 7.5t lorrys for years as had my father driving. Bought a 3.5t last year so i can get out & about on my own.

I am sure you can get finance on a newer 3.5T horsebox but the finance is going to be quite costly (much the same as it's likely to be on a 2nd hand 4x4 anyway) and you would have to have another car as well as a run about so that's two lots of insurance, tax plus the finance. I think you need to sit down and think about (a) How much you will use a box? (b) do you just want to travel one horse or two? and (c) what your finances are like.

Although I am not a trailer fan i think you may be better off looking at buying as economical 2nd hand 4x4 as you can get and a trailer. You can realistically get both for under £10K I would say and it may be possible to get both of them on finance or get a loan to cover the purchase. Insurance is going to be expensive on anything to be honest given your age I'm afraid.

thank you very much !! am finding it very hard at the moment !! would cost me £615 to do my trailer test (we already have a trailer at home) then id have to buy a 4x4 to tow it ! and i can not afford to tax insure etc two cars so would have to use that every day which will cost me lots in petrol !! all very complicated...but pleased to know if i decided to buy a 3.5 lorry the insurance isnt too expensive !!!
