I have a very old 1990 7.5t lorry at the moment and i am thinking of downsizing to a 6 or 6.5t. I cant afford a 30k lorry so would be looking at a slightly older one or maybe sourcing a cab/chassis and having one built. I would only want the basics built with the horse area finished as im happy to either do the living myself or wait till i can afford for someone else to do it.
Does anyone have a smaller lorry and how do you find it? i would only be travelling one horse but would like the option of occasionally taking 2 which is why i dont want a 3.5t
Also, any recommendations of where you found your smaller ones

I had a 6.5 ton for over 6 years. It was great, I loved it. Only sold it as one pony is on loan as daughter is at uni, and one is retired from showing and is now happy hacker.
It was pretty much like a slightly down scaled 7.5 ton.
Mine was a GB bodybuilders lorry.
They are a bit like hens teeth, sold my 2004 lorry really quickly on a fb horsebox selling site.

I would be tempted to go for a compact 7.5t tbh. The inbetweenies are like hens teeth and a premium is paid for them. I cant really see the benefit as its still a VOSA plate rathr than an MOT and you would have such more choice with a smaller 7.5t. Ive just sold mine, it was just over 20ft in length, had a fab payload, and also a neat living. My friend has a fantastic 4.5t which was about the same length but cost about 8 times more!

I have a compact 6 tonne and love it. Has about 2.4 tonnes of payload so even with 2 horses on board I don't need to worry. It's small enough to park in fairly tight car parks and fuel consumption is really good.

I sold my 7.5 which I had from new and got a new 6.5 living at the front tack locker behind a slide out in the living the horses travel (forwards ) beautifully in it huge amount of space for them .
I love it it was not however cheap .

My friend got one of these and she really likes it. Has 2t payload but isn’t much longer than a 3.5t. Doesn’t have a lot of living and is older. Don’t know what she paid but she was looking for quite a long time.

I had an old 6.5t for years and loved it. It had about 2 tonne of payload and a small living. It wasn’t just the size that made it good it was also the build quality. I sold it about 4 years ago as my oldie wasn’t really doing anything. I’m now trying to decide whether I can afford another as I now have a second horse and have been looking at 3.5t which imo many are over priced for poor quality builds and can see better value 6.5tonnes around.
