I wonder if anyone can offer any views please, I am looking to buy a horsebox but don't really want to go down the 7.5t route having recently sold a money pit of a 7.5t lorry when my horse retired.

My original plan was to go back to a trailer when i found my new horse but when we travelled him home he travelled so badly and seemed to struggle with balence (that was in a 3.5t rear facing lorry) that I'm now not comfortable to try that.

I've seen a nice 6t lorry where horse travels herringbone but I'm worried he won't have enough space with a width of 7.3ft in the horse area, he is 16.3hh gangly 4yr old and wears 6.6ft - 6.9ft rugs. I will only ever want to travel one horse so can adjust partitions soley for him.

Or am i better looking for a forward facing lorry between 5 - 6t as presume that will give him more space?

Its so hard not really knowing the horse, I know i need to take things slowly and get him used to travelling in whatever we end up with but want to give him the best possible chance of travelling happily.

I also don't have a massive budget looking around £6k.

Any thoughts / experiences anyone can share please, I'm getting myself more and more confused lol.

Have you got the actual length of the horse area, where he'd be travelling? I Think with herringbone you should be able to get a reasonable length in the horse area, if you can change the angle of the partition. I've had a 7.5t and a 3.5t so not seen the mid range in person though.

Full dimensions of horse area was height 7.10ft, width 7.3ft and length 8.4ft

What make and model is the chassis as with those dimensions im guessing it just a lighter 7.5 as they do come in lighter weight. Any based on 3.5t chassis wont very likely be herringbone unless for a very small horse

I have a equitrek carriage treka.
It's a trailer but the horses travel herringbone .
I got my TB who well over 17 hh in it and he travelled very well.
You won't get another horse in with him .
I should think the dimensions were about the same .

It's probably the seven ton iveco daily I have seen one of these herringbone .

Its a 6t Iveco, running cost wise I'd love a 3.5t but agree will be too small for what i need unfortunately. Having ponies must make life so much simpler!

Thanks thats reassuring to hear. Luckily I'll only ever want to travel one so he can have as much room as he needs

I have a 3.5 t ford transit that would be suitable for your horse (not for sale).

It has a very high roof height for it's size (overall height of it is 11'6"), it is only 6 foot 6 across but my horse travels with no partitions and chooses to travel part way between herringbone and forward facing. It could easily fit one 16.3 in the same way i use it.
It has a rear ramp, two tie rings and I just chuck her in and tie her to the one nearest the driver.

If you only have one horse then it should be easy to find a suitable 3.5t.

It's ancient and low budget though. I guess it would be difficult to find a new build that would accommodate one horse with plenty of room.

Its reassuring to know there are some out there, its just finding the older ones that have been looked after!

A friend of mine has a 6 ton box. Its horse area is the same width as my 7.5 ton and ive had 18.2's in mine comfortably

Do you happen to know the width of your horse area Conniegirl? My last lorry was really generous in horse area size so I'm finding it hard to compare

Can you try a trailer? You might find it's fine, which gives you another option. If you are only travelling one, you can travel without partitions, which would give you loads of room.

There are herringbone trailers on the market which might be worth a consideration. We went for a cheval liberte and my 17hh warmblood fits in herringbone. The partitions move which I will be doing to give him more space too. Previously I was travelling him in a 506 hire box as we sold our 511 then bought a giant horse while waiting for the new trailer and he didn't travel that well in that so it's a bit of a relief that he approves of this as it was not actually bought with giant horses in mind.

you should be fine if you move the partitions along mine is 7 ft 8 wide and my ID is 16.1 big chunky girl in 6 ft 9 rugs

My 6t is pretty much the same as this, I only ever travel one in it so have adjusted the partitions - my 16hh ISH/TB has loads of space. It's a super size box, easy to drive, I love it. I spent ages searching for something that had similar internal dimensions to my old 7.5t which carried 18hh with ease and this was as close as I could get.

MissMoo do you happen to know the dimensions of the horse area in your lorry?
