I remember about it! This is what I found & sent to a friend! Will see if I can find anything,
Yes you can do your HGV at 18. in fact you can take
your theory & start with the actual HGV lessons 3
month before your 18th birthday. It is called the
young driver scheme & my not yet 18 yr old is on it.
It is based on an NVQ but basically the requirements
are if your job depends on it!!!!!!!!!!!!! therefore
if you ride horses & need your HGV to get round to
shows you can do it. ( not saying I necessarily agree
with that) Your parents can put you on a scheme from
your yard. It costs about £220 to register but then
anyone else ie grooms etc can join on the same scheme
for a simple registration fee. You get up to approx
£2000 of training (lessons) + 2 tests paid for. then
every 3 to 4 months you get a free assesment from the
training centre up to your 21st. If you need further
info pm me for the details of my local training centre
& they will then find a local training centre in your
area & pass the details on.
There is also a "women in transport" scheme which sounds similar to the one mentioned above as you have to do an NVQ as well as the driving test. This scheme means that the cost of the course and test is half what it would normally be. However, I'm not sure if this is only available if you are doing your test through a commercial company.
Good luck with your driving. I start my 5 day LGV course on Friday and am oh so nervous!
Hi
I asked the BHS for information about the supposedly free HGV training, but it was only 'free' if you enrolled on a lengthy work based NVQ with the BHS based in a yard as a trainee.
So actually quite restrictive.
